A pub attached to a brewery? Why did that strike me as something pretty rubbish? I think I was expecting the alcohol version of a gift shop, a place where all the interest of an institution, in this case the Cain’s brewery, is lost in favour of just emptying your pockets. As is the case with 109% of the places I splash with prejudice, I was mistaken. The Brewery Tap is a delightful little pub in its own right, sitting demurely amongst the wide brick streets off St James Place. As would be expected the drink selection was heavily, or rather entirely, leaning towards that of the Cains variety. The sunburst-shaped wooden partitions cordoned the pub off into cosy nooks that still offered a view of the pleasant interior and the staff were wonderfully convivial. If you’re a Cains fan, I imagine this place would be a must, if only because of the freshness. The stuff must be pumped mere feet from the spot where it’s created. How many pubs can say that?

It’s a pity that this place isn’t slightly more accessible as part of a night out or have any accompnaying pubs to be part of a crawl as The Tap is an excellent pub with a great selection of ales. On the other hand it is attached to a brewery making these ales very good indeed and reasonably priced to boot. You’re not likely to get much of a crowd in here unless there has been a tour of the brewery just finished at the time of your visit but it’s the type of place you will find people coming out of their way for a good pub atmosphere and a nice tipple. They have a selection of Liverpool’s finest ales rarely seen outside the premises which makes it a must for anyone who likes their bitters, milds and stouts.
