The Railway epitomizes what I will miss about the UK. The grub is nothing to write home about, but definitely a cut above what’s on offer at most pubs(and a few restaurants) for a similar price. The ale selection is likewise respectable if by no means outstanding. In other words, if the food and drink isn’t quite up to Monro or Philharmonic standards, it’s also a crack above your standard Wetherspoon. Where the Railway really shines is in its homier– than-home ambiance. The seating area is divided up into several smaller rooms with mellow lighting, it’s almost always quiet, and the televisions are easy to avoid if that’s not your thing. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that it’s the coziest pub in central Liverpool. I wish I could take it with me.

A comfy old fashioned place, in the Good Beer Guide. Unfortunately they use their TVs to show depressing 24 hours news when there is nothing special on. Has a decent pint of Cain’s Bitter.

Being stood next to the reticent Lion Tavern meant the Railway got tarred with the same brush before I’d even stepped in. I was expecting a good old-fashioned pub, as silent as an after-hours cemetery for mutes. I was correct on the former. As for the latter, I couldn’t have been more wrongerer. The Railway is one of the friendliest pubs I’ve ever set foot in. Everybody here seemed so deeply content with life in all of its facets I started frantically casting my eyes round the walls, in case the Meaning of Eternal Happiness was nailed up somewhere in a gilded frame. I didn’t spot it. What I did see though was an admirable inn of quiet nooks, comfy chairs, elegant arches and walls so white they reflect the daylight pouring through the windows to make the place seem perpetually summery. This interior, combined with the mouth-watering menu and clientele who appear to have achieved Nirvana, make this a pub to revisit until time ends.

So I went in the evening and it was a little… quiet shall we say, but I would definitely recommend this traditional pub for a lunch and a pint in between all those hectic business deals you’re cutting.(So you caught me, I just like the food and I’ll be in here all day) They do a Sunday Roast… wait for it… Three Whole courses for £6.95. If that ain’t a bargain then I don’t know what is! Wednesday is Steak night and I would definitely try it out in here. They have a really pretty outdoor seating area which is decorated with twinkly little fairy lights, it’s just a little off-putting that it’s next to lots of dead space used as a carpark which is quite common in the surrounding areas.

For those working in Liverpool’s business district around the Morrfields and Old Hall St areas, The Railway will probably be on your radar as a classic pub for good beers and great scran, if not well here it is. The Railway underwent a bit of a renovation a couple of years ago and has turned itself into a gastropub but wait, not in any sort of pretentious North London kind of way, just a slightly-cleaner-with-half-decent-food Liverpool sort of way. As you expect the place gets very busy at weekday lunchtimes and most evenings after work especially when the sun is out as even The Railway’s very modest beer garden — a few patio tables next to a car park — is a premium outdoor spot in this part of town. At a weekend however it is another story as this whole stretch of road is pretty dormant until monday lunchtime rolls around.

A very good lively pub which is located slap bang in the middle of the commercial district of the city. Particularly popular for well earned Friday afternoon after work drinks — does tend to get very busy though with office workers from about 4pm onwards! Food is served from lunchtimes and there is a good choice of menu and is reasonably priced. Sandwiches are a good choice here! They often have live music acts and there is a outdoor seating area at the side of the pub for all those naughty smokers. Drink prices are fairly average and the staff are friendly.

An absolutel imposing buiding in a sea of concrete and when you enter it’s like stepping back in time. Real time warp but oosing character you can imagine Shipping owners of yesteryear discussing their business whilst buxom wenches served on– sadly there’s neither now but the staff are friendly and the service excellent. Good beer, excellent pub grub and nice surroudings where you can sit in comfort and the loos are spotless. Off the night life circuit but ok for lunch and some pleasant outdoor seating at the side away from the traffic.
