In terms of choices, Waterfields has got off lightly if you ask me. Pasty or a sausage roll — it’s hardly Sophie’s Choice really. This is the third best bakery/pastry shop in Formby after Satterthwaites and Sayers respectively. And if there was a Greggs it would be the fourth best bakery. It’s not especially bad I just don’t really like the options here which feel a little pedestrian. It’s not that I don’t admire the simplicity of a meat and potato pasty but if you’re going to do classic, then do it really well. The bread too is a little airy and not in a good way, it actually feels like you have a lump of chewy air in your mouth. Whatever that rally feels like. I assume this, as I’ve just said it. Three major points in its favour though 1. Excellent gingerbread men, chewy and a little spiced. 2. The staff are always happy, and I mean always. 3. The outdoor seating area is particularly nice in the sun. So nice, in fact, that it almost makes up for how not nice some of the pasties are.
