I always go here thinking it’s a good idea but then get there and realise it’s actually not that cheap and it’s full of chavs spending their benefits. Perhaps I am jaded by the American Outlet Malls which actually offer some great bargains e.g. Gap hoodies for $ 10. The Gap Outlet Store at McArthur Glen seems to have missed the memo on designer outlets being cheap. There is also a Next, which sells all the left over tat from their sales which nobody actually wants to buy. The Marks and Spencer, well if you are over 50 it’s great. The rest of the stores aren’t particularly exciting, including a Whittard’s, Cadbury store and TK Maxx. Head to Princes Street or one of the out of town shopping centres if you’re looking for a day of shopping. Otherwise you will find yourself needing a stiff drink and bath after visiting this mall.

I was really keen to visit this designer shopping outlet, heck they sell designer labels with 60% off! I had been warned by a few friends that it was quite ‘neddy’, but I went anyway. It only took about 20minutes by car(ok, I got lost), and there is a bus that leaves from St Andrews bus station regularly. I thought getting there was the hard part… the shopping centre was huge! There were huge M&S, Matalan, TK Maxx etc etc outlets everywhere, I didn’t have a clue where the main centre was. When I eventually found it, it was huge. I had to constantly return to the entrance to refer to the map. They have some decent shops, like Gap, Mexx, Calvin Kline, Armani, Ted Baker, Cruise and Karen Millen. Only the last three are worth visiting, however, all the other outlets were the same with last-years stock(and it’s last year for a reason) and really, well, neddy. I was a bit annoyed as all the sizes in Karen Millen were small, extra small or extra extra small. I’m not a big girl, but I’m definitely not extra extra small. Whenever I found something I liked I was met with disappointment. Also, although it is supposed to be a discount outlet store, I found it to be quite pricey. ‘But it’s a designer outlet!’ I hear you cry. I know, I know, but paying £420 instead of £840 wouldn’t really float my boat.

I have one piece of advice for when visiting Mcarthur glen. Wear comfortable shoes. The center itself is quite large but it also has additional shops surrounding it as well as the almondvale centre. The cadburys shop as well as the gap and next outlets are some of the most popular stores. Get there early.

WOW Heard about this place before visiting, was bigger than i thought. Great selection of shops, great price range available. All linked in one place so excellent for you serious shoppers wanting it all done in a day. New food court too so you won’t even have to leave to refuel. Cinema on site too, in case your legs need a break. Great value shops, discount stores too, which you have to love. Happy shopping
