This place annoys me.(The one on Whitechapel High Street, that is.) Whilst their food is perfectly acceptable and they do some good options for breakfast if you’re on your way to work, their attitude is really offputting. Although they’re definitely not the only place in London to have a holier-than-thou ‘our food is more fresh/organic/local than yours’ approach, I really resent their occasionally patronising attitude, especially as they don’t quite live up to what they promise. A case in point: they get their muffins from Wales. That’s right, Wales. Because obviously London is such a muffin-free hellhole that they had to trek out into the wilderness to find decent cakes, wresting them out of the gnarled hands of honest Welshmen, dodging the murderous sheep and bringing them, triumphantly, to the grateful sugar-starved city dwellers in the Whitechapel area. Half decent food? Yes. A good addition to the area? Probably. Fresh? Hell no.

Fresh Café has come through in all the hard times, delivering great coffee, great service and an artist friendly environment. The large caffeine rich beverages are Canadian girl approved and can include flavouring like almond or caramel for £1.80(for a large!) The café is Halal, has awesome lunch deals ie. panini, crisps and drink for £3.95, and hasn’t budged their prices since the recession began. Kash(the owner) remains a gem and is still always around, all smiles and happy to share a table and some chit-chat. The next door space has been bought up by Fresh now too. Not only are the walls of the café free reign for independent artist to hang their work but there’s a gallery next door which is doing exhibitions with a frequent turn-over. Look up no ID gallery, it’s a nice little space.

I have not seen a fresh sandwich bar called fresh at this address though there is a newly opened one next to whitechapel station at 275 whitechapel high street around the corner. This is an good new coffee shop with an interesting glass roof upstairs. Most food and coffees are cheap and this a good break from whitechapel market.

Café Fresh is a little gem tucked away at the Aldgate East end of Commercial Road in East London. They are a haven for hungry London Met University students due to there inexpensive menu, and relaxed view on tweaking their meals to suit you. I am a big fan of their baguettes and hot sandwiches that cost £2-£3.50. They are cheap, tasty and surprisingly filling. The smoothies aren’t bad, but stay away from the kiwi, strawberry and orange one because that was a bit tasteless. This area is quite design orientated and Café fresh are happy to display artists work in their gallery downstairs. Many of the local arts students use this opportunity to display and sell their work. Great café that has free WiFi
