Price is amazing, food great and the service was also. We weren’t sure about going here but we’re really glad we did. We went twice in a row. The chicken tendori was really good.

After a little hesitancy, a group of friends I decided to pay a visit to Castle Tandoori for some pre-bowling grub. Well, I am very glad that we did. Upon entering, we were greeted by a waiter and shown to our seats. Then, for no apparent reason, we were told to wait for a while before we ordered. Not sure why, but after 5 or so minutes, a waiter came to see us, took our drinks orders and we confirmed with him that we would be eating the buffet. Now then. Despite the £5.95 price being advertised so prominently, this amount only applies to non – meat buffet meals. The meat buffet will set you back just under a tenner. Fair warning. So, on to the quality of the food. A lot of the starter and side dishes were heavy on the grease but tasty enough. The vegetable dishes were particularly good. The Sag Daal was my favourite. The meat dishes were pretty good, however the consistency of the meat was typically very chewy. The worst offender was the Beef. It always confuses the hell out of me when Indian restaurants choose to serve beef. It can’t feel great to cook your sacred animal, now can it? All in all, fairly good value for money, but they lose star rating on the crafty pricing and the poor quality meat that you get when you do pay the extra.

Castle Tandoori is in Elephant and Castle shopping centre, adjacent to the Elephant and Castle Northern Line tube. It is rather like stepping back into the 1970s when you step inside, but there are some very cute touches, such as elephants on the(worn!) carpet! In the daytime it does all you can eat buffets for around £6. In the evening there’s an a la carte menu. We opted for a chicken dansak, a chicken jalfrezi, and a daal. Chicken was good quality and tender but all of the dishes were swimming in grease; as was the daal. Service was friendly and you get a free After Eight mint at the end(is that 70s style or 80s style?!) but I couldn’t particularly rave about the food.

Cheap and cheerful indian in Elephant & Castle shopping centre. Would have liked to be able to give it 3,5 — not quite a 4 in my book though. Have had many tasty meals here, and will come back for more. Soon I hope. Service can be a bit hesitant, but when you’re recognized as a regular it’s always friendly. If you are lucky to come on a day when the manager is here(I think he looks after several restaurants) the food seems to be extra tasty(a clear 4) and you will soon find yourself in the middle of a lively and lengthy conversation on anything from world events to local planning issues Go try it — don’t be put off by the location.
