I think this little Café must be fairly new, or changed hands recently, as it took me by surprise while we were on our familiar neighborhood walk. Fairly unassuming, this little café could be labelled a greasy spoon, given it’s no-frills breakfast and lunch fare at a surprisingly low cost, but that improperly implies grease and grunge which this happy little place does not at all. Certainly, it’s not a trendy place, serve only the best ingredients, or challenge your expectations, but for a hearty egg breakfast with as many sides as you want to pile on, it’s exactly that, no more no less. My entire plate, with complimentary toast slices and espresso coffee was £4.80, you have to like that. Service was friendly and prompt, and the seating, in some places largely communal tables, allows large groups or several small ones to gather happily. The friday morning I went, plenty of backslapping locals had already made it their own. So in this way, Chameleon does a better job than most greasy spoons, as you might actually want to hang out after eating, and for value it’s hard to beat. Just don’t be comparing it to all the fancy, high quality options you have up and down upper st, they’re not trying to be competition.
