One large screen, with very comfy chairs. Based inside the French Institute showing mainly French films or other foreign language films, Q&As and special events. In the same building is the French library on the first floor, which has recently been renovated and includes a children’s library. On the ground floor and large hall is the café and box office. A lovely venue slightly further west of London.

This is a lovely place for those who like French cinema. It shows exclusively French films and is a wonderful venue. The prices are reasonable and it’s not unusual for directors to come in for Q&A sessions after screenings. The quality of screenings is faultless and attention is obviously shown to the quality of the sound and the picture. The auditorium is very spacious yet it feels homely, the seats are comfortable, and as everyone is there for the same thing — to see a quality French film — it is very unusual to have people talking through the screening. The café area is also lovely, with a good atmosphere, if a little pricey. If you’re a fan of French cinema you can do no better than Cinema Lumiere.

This is not your typical run-of-the-mill cinema. Set in a fantastic art-deco building and showing only french films(subtitled) this deservedly is known as one of London’s finer cultural points. The Lumiere also has regular wine tastings and talks– but i’ve not been to either. Ticket prices are fair too– especially when its means that you can show off about seeing ‘cul-charrr’ instead of the usual Hollywood rubbish to your friends.
