Great experience, great service. We enjoyed a tasty Sunday meal in a very pleasant and intense atmosphere at an incredibly price for London(in a positive way). The menu is rich and the venue is lively. Definitely recommended.

Trojan Horse. Yes that’s right, I ate a Trojan Horse and it tasted great. So you should eat a Trojan Horse too. For vegetarians you can get a Vege Trojan too, just so you don’t feel too left out. Nice Turkish food. Meze and stuff, it tasted good. Always busy in there, but nice and quiet on this particular Monday evening, so I great choice for dins out with my visiting parents. And dinner finished with complimentary flaming sambucca shots. Amazing! Waiters laughed at me when I asked for water to help the fire water go down better. And then laughed some more when they saw that my mum was way more hardcore at doing the shot downing that I was. But laughed in a nice way, don’t feel sorry for me. Ps. Trojan Horse is tomato-y chunks of chicken wrapped up in an aubergine covered bomb with tomato sauce surrounded in cheesy bechamel sauce. Not a pony in sight and oh so tasty

It was late, I was in Stoke Newington and I’d been drinking. Under such circumstances, there is only one food option which will hit the spot — Turkish kebabs. Walking into Clicia is almost like walking into a huge Turkish cliché. Ottoman era rugs and pictures adorn the walls. The room is tastefully lit by a series of stained glass lamps. Huge hairy men with arms the size of tree trunks sidle up to you to take your order whilst a woman ululates songs of love and loss over the PA. And, best of all, they serve meat. LOTS of meat. Owing to their love of serving up huge hunks of tasty animals, Clicia is probably not the best place to bring your vegan friend to. But if you’re a carnivore, you’ll feel as though you’ve died and gone to grilled flesh heaven. I rocked up here slightly drunk and very hungry, and found myself ordering something called a ‘Lamb Gordion Knot’ because any food stuff which appeared to involve greek mythology and basic Boy Scouts skills in alright in my book. What I got was half a lamb grilled to perfection, and smothered in a wonderfully sour yoghurt mint sauce. Whilst the dish was slightly too rich for me to eat all of it, what I did manage to shovel down my gullet was shoved down there with great relish — and one or two Efes beers. Best of all, it only set me back £15, which is great value for a meal which made me groan with pleasure and undo the top button of my jeans. If you’re a sucker for tasty meat and find yourself stuck in Stoke Newington one night, you could do a lot worse than dining at Clicia. Just be sure to bring an empty stomach and a love of strong Turkish coffee and hairy men.

On a rainy and busy Sunday lunchtime, Clicia was a perfect place to grab a table. It’s small and unassuming, the menu is wonderfully both British and Mediterranean. I opted for a taste of both: a plate of hummus and flatbread, and a goat cheese quesadilla.(I understand that a quesadilla isn’t British at all, but it came from the other side of the menu, just go with it). All the food was served up quick and hot, and the hummus was some of the best I’ve ever had. Super creamy. The flatbread was not your average pita triangle… sesame seeded and flaky bread was the order of the day. With plenty of bevvie options, including tons of fresh squeezed juices, you’re spoiled for choice no matter what your appetite. I’d definitely stop back in if I’m up in Stokey again!

Embarrassingly the only time I’ve been to this Turkish restaurant has been for a full English breakfast. Classy huh? Thankfully my shame was slightly compensated by how many other people there were following this same line of thought. At half 11 on a Saturday morning, you couldn’t move for people munching away at sausages and hash browns. The breakfast itself was very nice although I always find it a bit creepy when a fried egg arrives in a perfect circle, it reminds me too much of the horrible posters outside McDonald’s which try to persuade me that an egg McMuffin is a good way to start the day. That said, a fried breakfast isn’t much better. Also, I have a personal issue with hash browns– being a Scot I like my potatoes in the form of a tattie scone and I always find hash browns too greasy. These were no expection and I only managed one bite. The service in Clicia was very good and our bill was pretty cheap. Although I prefer Blue Legume up the road, I wouldn’t rule Clicia out as an alternative.

Another day, another hangover. Why, oh why God do I feel this bad? Everything hurts and please just let me lie in a darkened room. But the suggestion is made to go out for a late Sunday lunch, early supper(if breakfast/lunch is brunch, what is lunch/supper? Slupper?) And who am I to burst bubbles and crush dreams? So, with no intended destination other than ‘some place on Church Street’ we set out into the cold. Turkish was decided on en route across the park and so we fell upon the first place offering all things Turkish. My choice of socks had been hard enough so I passed the ordering buck to my partner and pretty soon we were surrounded by meze bits of this and meze bits of that. The table behind us was full to bursting with hyperactive under fives and their mothers, and one child who keep running in and out of the door to check their bikes were still there, every time letting in a burst of freezing air. My mood crashed within moments. But the meze on the whole, was good. There wasn’t nearly enough bread offered to go with the generous servings of delicious taramasolata, hummus and all the other wonderous things. But the two seafood dishes were not good. One I don’t remember being anything other than cold and fishy and the other– the squid was chewy and came with a few sloppy tomatoes. I do remember both these dishes were expensive and small. The staff insisted on mopping the floor around us despite the restaurant being full and it only being mid afternoon. I want to like this place but I think they’re cutting off more than they can chew. They do these huge mains with artful decoration to boot and all the meze and full English this and that, eggs Benedict, poached boiled Its overwhelming. The coffee is good though.

Clicia has a decent variety of food, but I find the main courses to be a little bland. However its good value, as you get some large portions compared to what the same amount of money might get you elsewhere on Church Street. The Meze platter however is excellent, with a great variety of dips, bread and hot and cold meats. This is also a good place to come for lunch, as the food is pretty healthy and light. Its on the corner of the street, so there is a lot of natural light coming in from the large windows, that brightens up the slightly gloomy atmosphere. Its much more pleasant in the evening, with the dim lighting and many candles.

The latest incarnation of a café/restaurant on this site(there’ve been a few over the years), Clicia is just a few doors down from its older competitor The Blue Legume. I eschewed the charms of Clicia recently in favour of The Blue Legume, but after the bad service I received there, I’ll be giving Clicia another chance in future. The veggie breakfast I had at Clicia last time I went was very satisfactory and perhaps just as importantly, there are great people-watching opportunities through the large picture windows onto Church St. The service was good too.

One of the cheaper options for eating on Stoke Newington Church Street, Clicia offers a cheap(ish) menu that is simple and honest– fish and meat grills, casseroles and mezze dishes, all of which are extremely filling. I strongly recommend their large hot and cold mezze plates which are big enough for two people to share, and are crammed full of tabbouleh, hummous, falafels, olives, feta triangle, hallumi, calamari, salami, kofte and breads(they also come as a vegetarian option) It is a huge amount of food for 9.75. The restaurant practically glows– there is a very warm and relaxed atmosphere with bejeweled mirrors and lamps adorning the walls and candles on the table. A note to those for a good place to take somebody on a date– this restaurant has excellent lighting. Grab the tables by the large windows so that you can people-watch on Church Street, or if you smoke and the weather is fine, sit outside on one of the tables they put out on the pavement.
