The Empire is such a great space. When you come in the door of this huge building, you can look up to see the wooden stairs winding up to the top floor. It is an amazing location to see art and check out some talented newcomers. I think it’s brilliant that students and graduates can have their work displayed in such a cool space. When you trot down Vyner Street, it seems a little dubious at first and you never expect to see funky neon signs and a ghetto-cool white upholstered front door. But hey, that’s art for ya!

I love this little gallery. Run by two wonderful ladies it sells affordable art by both upcoming and established artists. Set in what looks like an old church, the place has a really fantastic atmosphere making it a perfect spot to view art and take in some culture. Try and make it for one of there First Thursday evening so you can get a chance to mingle with other arty types. This is the kind of space that you’d make the effort to visit. I’d recommend checking out their website first to see whats on though!

Situated upstairs in a warehouse, next to the pink neon sign saying ’ O art’, down Vyner Street, East London. The first time I arrived was on a cold December’s evening. A queue outside, and a five-minute waiting list made us realise that we were in for a surprise! Walking up through a windy wooden staircase we were lead to two rooms with high ceilings, and beautiful old dark wooden beams. Which created a cosy and intimate night. As it was a private view night, the gallery had hired a rather drunken but indeed terribly jolly French classical mini orchestral! We drunk plenty of free red wine, merrily talked about the art and listened to fantastic music. A jolly good night all round.

There was a curiously eclectic range of work on show here when I visited — painting, drawing, print-making and even video. After(cleverly enough) reading the accompanying pamphlet, I discoverd it was part of an initiative called«Vision Impossible» that shows work by the organisation’s emerging artists. This show is a really good opportunity for buying affordable, interesting art by up-and-coming names.
