Fish Cafe

I had amazing melt-​in-​the-​mouth fish (plaice) and chips here. The best I’ve eaten. Reasonably priced and good service. Eating at the outside table great for watching the world go by

This «posh chippie» is far too close to home for comfort — the £5 fish/​chips box is just so tempting after a day at work. Why would I cook when for only £5 I could have delicious fish and chips! I have to use a lot of willpower walking past.
To be fair I have to say that I’m only reviewing the take-​out side of this place. They do have a restaurant out back & I see them offering a range of seafood, salads, soups, etc. on their blackboard. I think it is aiming to be a lunch & evening destination and I do see lots of people eating there at those time. I think, but I’m not certain, that they serve wine.
What I can say is that this is no ordinary chip shop. The chips are chunky & freshly made, fried in a nice oil that doesn’t leave them greasy or coated. The fish is lightly battered and always crumbles apart nicely. I actually think that, though it doesn’t appear to be the market they are going for, if they started to offer burgers of similarly high quality they would do really well.
The staff are always really friendly and helpful. You might be put off by this place, thinking it could just be a «greasy chippie» but I can recommend a visit if you’re in the area, even if not for the full restaurant experience but for a quick fish & chips. The outside seating in Summer is nice & you can people watch while you eat.

Went in for a midday lunch a few doors down from the Hampstead tube station. Friendly service, clean and quaint décor and probably the best fish and chips of my life… wish I’d had an extra stomach to finish it all. The fish was fresh and perfectly crispy, served with lemon, malt vinegar and tartar sauce. Chips were excellent.

Excellent service and the haddock and chips was fresh with an excellent batter. Loved it. Will be back.

After a September day spent strolling the Heath and swimming in the ponds, my pal and I were famished and went searching for some good fish & chips: we found it here at Fish Café. We sat outside for an early dinner, the friendly & attentive wait staff took good care of us and the meals were just great. We tried the cod as well as another whitefish (may have been hake? Don’t remember) – both were prepared wonderfully. Highly recommended.

I have eaten here three times. Crisp, fresh and lovely, like most of my friends. Try the matzo meal coating.
