A smattering of locals who turn around to look as you enter could be seen as a bad sign in a pub that you are not familiar with. This was not at all the case here. We all wandered outside to the quite large yard they boast(there is even a bar area out there, presumably for the beautiful summer days). More beer choice than I expected including the delicious So’ Hop from the Moor brewery. These guys are always so awesome and I’m always so happy to see their beers. That was on cask and there were some tempting keg options too. There was cool chap from the lovely town of Penzance behind the bar.

There’s something about the feeling of a place that just makes you feel at home. This is one of those places, recently renovated and re-opened not far from my flat. So of course I was convinced to try it out. I tagged along with some friends for Saturday brunch, not realising it opened at 12pm. So bunch swiftly turned into lunch! The owner was really friendly, Australian and with a cute dog we named Beryl as the northern alternative to Meryl. Even though it just opened as we arrived, the place was clean and set up for lunch and the kitchen was obviously ready to go. I ordered a burger, which came with bacon jam(almost like a meaty haggis-like crust over the burger which gave a really depth of flavour) and some lovely thick and soft skin-on chips. £11 is a bit pricey, but I’ll pay that for great food and excellent service in a local business.

Really nice interior, newly remodelled. Can’t speak to the food yet, but frankly the beer leaves something to be desired. There was one beer worth drinking on the taps(Partizan Atomium). The rest was nothing but trite commercial lagers with the inevitable Sharps and some other bland bitter on cask. Having said that, the bottle selection is quite nice, so there’s a glimmer of hope that the Manager may come round to serving something decent in a pint. I’ll be back for a quick bottle for sure.

Wonderful renovation. A tired, run down pub has been transformed in to a modern pub with delicious food and great atmosphere. Spacious outdoor area too. Wines have gone from a tap to a lovely wine list. Luckily the colourful locals have stayed too so the fun is assured.
