Strange pub to me. I’ve seen this pub many many years and even been there many many times over many a year. It appears like a ‘local’ pub. Well actually it once was with much more dodgy clients but thats gone now and it’s done up, with even a roast being advertised with much more families turning up. Can’t out finger on it, I’m not sure what It is trying to be. Maybe nothing, just a run of mill pub. I want to like it, not the biggest fan of the bar being so narrow as you walk in though the beer was ok. Prepared to give it a chance though and visit again. Suppose it’s perched in a strange location. Hoping it has some sort of music night as I think a theme would be good for a pub like this actually.

This review is purely for their food. The service is slow and servers not very friendly. As the waitress stated«I’m a vegan so can’t help you with sauces or anything food related», not that it would have helped. The wings were undercooked and messy, nachos were basically a can of beans plopped on top of cheap tortilla chips, and the burger had so much thyme mixed in it, it was basically inedible. On top of that add the 30 – 45 minute wait for them to deliver your food, and it’s a recipe for kitchen nightmares. As a pub I’m sure it’s great, just make sure to eat before coming here.

Good food, good music, good company, nice pub. A great venue for music, comedy and poetry. They do a very good Sunday roast and have an all round decent menu.

I visited this pub on a Sunday afternoon for the weekly jazz jam session. Apparently it’s been going on for the last 30 years! The live music comes from a large room in the back.(Cover charge is £5) The first hour is a jam session by the regulars and the second half is open mic for local singers. I was actually there to see a friend perform. The ambience is warm and welcoming, it’s fantastic! Most people seem to live in the neighborhood and everyone is having a great time listening and dancing. Their Swedish pear cider was great if you like sweet cider. I really liked the breaded brie with cranberry sauce and eggy crème brûlée. I also tried a bite of falafel burger which was quite good.

Lovely pub, nice music, friendly staff, and blissfully quiet(could do with a few more customers in fact! But newly reopened so finding its feet). Absolutely beautiful original features: Chesterfield banquettes, wood partitions, etched glass, stained glass ceiling lights, etc. Good pub quiz on a Tuesday, good selection of booze of all descriptions, and have heard the food is good though not tried it. A gem of a local.

Nice refurb, probably won’t last, too much fizz, not enough ale. Pricey for beer, wine and food. Interesting piece on the retailinsider website Says it all, really. Under new management, only one ale on, seems the pub was without electricity for the past week, just reopened this evening. £3.20 for Purity Mad Goose in good nick. Bodes well for the future Now with 4 handpumps, still featuring some GK muck, 5th one on way apparently, a bit too noisy for my liking, showing a film in the backroom, music in the front and people whom seemed to have had very long Sunday lunches. beat a hasty retreat to the Toll Gate.
