Solid 4 star pub. Good range of beers /drinks. Reasonably priced. I went to see a play upstairs then stayed for a few pints. It’s a really good place to see a play /show /whatever and the pub is a solid little boozer. I don’t think they do food. Just drinks. It’s node old style pub. Not trying to be anything fancy. Decent place to go, have a few cheekies before /after /irrespective of a show. If I’m in the area I expect I’ll pop back here again.

Great unique small theatre above pub. Hold 50 people. I would definitely visit again as it is a very intimate theatre and has some big names turn up to try new comical material out such as Sarah Millican. We went along to see Pete Firman and he was amazing he was testing out his new magic tricks to take on tour with him next. The seats were quite comfy felt a bit like a living room. The price fees for the acts are quite reasonable around £10. I would definitely go along again. Unique

Ended up in here with friends and although I was quite hungry the menu was very limited and seemed to be all about pies which I don’t eat. Two of my friends ordered pies, but somehow they managed to burn one which happened to be the last pie. They gave my friend half of the £8 price back.

Nice little pub with a few tables outside. Not too expensive and good range of drinks. And a theatre upstairs!

Just had a really good night here. Went to see a two woman play called«Air Swimming» which was a hilarious/moving portrayal of two inmates of a mental institution in the 20s. Tiny but intimate theatre space. I was utterly transported! Then had a few drinks downstairs. It was packed(Friday night) but very lively and the house red went down a treat. Great place to catch a bit of culture and enjoy a cosy drink with friends.

Wonderful little place, whether you’re going to see a bit of fringe theatre, some comedy or just dropping in for a pint. Good range of beers, wines and ciders, and always a buzzing atmosphere.

Good little pub just behind Upper Street. Upstairs for comedy etc. Big tables, old feel.

This is a classic local pub, of the kind that have shamefully disappeared in the last ten years or so. But the Hen and Chickens has thankfully hung on tightly. The theatre upstairs is small and intimate, and hosts such comedy luminaries as Eddie Izzard and Russell Brand, just as they are prepping their material for their tours. Downstairs is the main pub area, which is small but well formed. The clientele are local and arty types and the odd scallywag too, which is always good. The wine is lethal for some reason. I always end up in a right state when I go here.

I have been to the Hen and Chickens a couple of times and it is always to see a show. They have a great selection of up and coming comedy artists and performers most nights of the week and it is really easy to get to from the tube station. It is quite a small intimate theatre upstairs(above the main pub) but it adds to the atmosphere. The pub part of the venue is also nice but I have never stayed there long enough to try any food as I have been rushing up stairs to watch a show. I would definitely recommend the Hen and Chickens for an alternative night at the pub.

This is a great venue to see the latest plays and comedy. I come here often with friends and battle my way to find a seat or even two(it can be rammed in here!). There is usually a fairly decent range of beers on, and even some real ale for the Camra lovers amongst you. If you ask nicely the lovely bar stuff will decant your drink of choice into a plastic tumbler and you can even enjoy your comedy with some lubrication for your throat so you can heckle the performers! It can be a bit horrid here on match days, as can many other pubs in this area. Of course, this is only horrid if you dislike Arsenal, if you are a fan you’ll probably love it!

I love the idea of theatre pubs. There’s something irrepressibly optimistic about them why wouldn’t you want to imbibe of culture and alcohol in one place? What could be more convenient, more redemptive, than sinking a few and then stumbling upstairs and catching some thesp action? There are a few of them on Upper Street, and for years I knew only of the venerable Red Lion at the Angel end. Now I live at the other end, I walk past the H&C every day. And very good it is too. Pub little. One room. 6 tables. Sofa. Busy on Friday nights. Regrettably Arsenal-infested on match days, but that’s true of everywhere in N5. They’re big on comedy. Crammed with stand-ups, it sometimes seems, but a quick glance of the website tells me that they have lots of little comic plays upcoming. Laughs and booze? What’s not to like?

We came here to the comedy club to see some friends perform. It’s a really nice pub, with proper seating upstairs for a decent size audience to watch the shows. Drinks are good prices and you can take them upstairs to watch the show, they transfer drinks to a plastic cup so glasses aren’t broken because you end up giggling so much you’re on the floor! And what a laugh we had — the Slap, Tickle and Squeak group is beginning to perform there on a regular basis — 3 Kiwis who put on an hour long show that leaves you in stitches every time. Give the pub a call and ask when they’re performing there next — you really oughta! After the show everyone converges in the pub downstairs and has a merry old time!
