Great location. Perfect spring and summer exterior. Appealing interior. Clean washroom. By mid-morning, London’s liquid sunshine, appropriately chilled, poured on us in traditional glory. By the time we’d walked from Trinity College, under the Southwark Bridge and south to Main Street Park, we had cold in our knees and water in our shoes. Even my Britanny cousin who took to the morning like a mallard on holiday was soaked and speaking of it. We appropriately stopped at the Island Café for a warm-up, dry-down, bearing fix and cup of something. We’d eaten large breakfast and small lunch, tea would no longer warm our bones, so we had hot chocolate and apple pie. Those items fulfilled the need. All the various contents of this Greek deli looked very good. Breakfast most of the day and sandwiches seem to be the specialties. Alas, I, and many others failed to connect to the free Wi-Fi using the login provided on flyers attached to the wall. I’d love to return for breakfast and lunch.

Loved the English breakfast. Nice and hardy, and pretty cheap – less than a fiver! Of course, you’ll get what you pay for in terms of quality. Overall, the menu is small but appropriate for this type of establishment. Heavy on the breakfast items, with a lot of sandwiches for the rest of the day. The menu is pretty basic, but I wish it were more descriptive – I didn’t realize they automatically put mayonnaise and all types of vegetables on the sandwiches. The free wi-fi is even more of an incentive to stop on by – you don’t even need to ask a server in person for a password, it’s printed on signs on the walls! Order at the counter, grab a number, get served at your table. Fast service. Imma say 3.5 stars, which I’ll round up to 4.

Winter has me-a-craving some caff grub! This had exactly what I was after(simple fried eggs, toast and a cuppa), did it well and have a pretty broad menu of breakfast and lunch eats. Service is friendly and efficient, free Wi-Fi, and am 80s music radio station playing in the background — what more could you want? c*

The Island is a greasy spoon with wifi, and it’s brilliant at both of those things. The wifi has always been strong and reliable on the days I’ve spent doing work there, which was while others were connected too. The food is standard fare, sandwiches, salads etc. Perfectly decent, and cheap too. The staff are pleasant, fast and helpful. For sunnier days the outside area is great, and yes, the wifi works out there too. I keep going back and I don’t intend to stop anytime soon!

Clean, warm, free read of a newspaper, reasonable prices, make up any type of bap/roll or sandwich with ingrediants to suit your taste and a reasonable tasty coffee. Thats all I can ask for a quick munch up at lunch time. Oh and friendly as well.

The Island sandwich shop gets it’s name from it’s location between the two access roads from Southwark Bridge Road onto Union Street. They serve pretty standard café fare; the usual range of sandwiches, baps, baked potatoes, lasagne, lattes, and bottled beers. Expect to pay £3 for a chicken and avocado bap with salad, £1.20 for a bacon roll in the morning. Nothing special but still reasonably good. There is a large seating area both inside and out, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding seating. The staff are very efficient, and in fact there never seems to be much of a queue simply because they are so quick! One additional bonus is free wifi.
