My mum introduced me to this shop and I’ve liked it ever since. There’s a variety of clothing items to choose from and they’re really nice too.

Selby’s is one of a small number of ‘old-fashioned– department stores left outside central London. At first glance it’s a little bit scruffy and does not seem to have a lot going on, but the store is a lot bigger than it looks and houses several high street concessions including Topshop, Bennetton and Warehouse. They obviously have some good buyers on board, as I’ve also found some smaller indie labels I like stocked here on occasion. There are also a few beauty therapists on site offering eyebrow threading and shaping at a decent price. As well as fashion, there’s a really handy home section upstairs where you’ll find everything you need to kit out a kitchen, plus a wide range of bedlinens including designer brands like Orla Kiely. There’s also a Café Nero for when you get peckish.

The cookware sction has recently been improved greatly and has a fine selection of goodies, many of which match nearby argos on price. one tip– check out the nearby nags head market for tuperware and poundstore like bargains, its only on the other side of the carpark :)

The lack of customer service in London never ceases to amaze me. Yes, it is getting better, but come on London get with it! I was happy to find plenty of housewares on sale, but wow, the sales people were really reluctant to answer my questions or offer me any help. Maybe I just got a few bad ones. One of the things that bothered me most was their very inefficient pricing system. Can you believe they don’t believe in bar codes? I bought a basket full of kitchenware and it took forever for them to punch in every code on the till. Though I’m reluctant to come back, this location is very convenient. Holloway Road has other stores I frequent, such as Waitrose and Boots. That makes me give a little bit. But can ya work on the service thing for me Selby? PLEASE!

The top floor has been recently revamped and Café Nero has replaced the old cafeteria, but James Selby is still a charmingly weird old department store. It’s one of a dying breed, the independent department store. Upstairs, shoppers can buy sewing notions, polyester granny smocks and aprons, low end Wedgewood lines, Pyrex, and linens. A nice range of linens is offered from practical no-iron percale to sheets and pillows by Monsoon. On the ground floor, clothes are grouped into boutique-like clusters. Evans has a section, so does Monsoon, so does Top Shop. Cosmetic counters flank the front of the store, next to the wig shop and hair salon and a few sticks of furniture are sold in the basement.

James Selby has cool stuff for good prices. You can get Topshop clothing here and Indie labels. You can also get cheap dishes and glassware. This shop reminds me of John Lewis on a budget, complete with Camden style strippy tights for your goth moments or years. J. Selby comes complete with a wig salon with normal coloured wigs and a magenta wig! I thought the kitchenware was really cheap and there were some pretty glasses on offer from 1.50. I want to come back here(Why can’t I ever buy anything here the first time, damn North London rent) to buy this silk polka dot dress for 34.00. It is made by some Indie designer beginning with Dark… but I can’t read my own handwritting so I’ll have to work on my freehand and let you know. Go to James Selby. you will not be disappointed!

Rather than going down to the big department stores such as Debenham in the west end, I prefer going to Selby James sometimes because I can buy my perfumes, make-up and top brand ladies fashion without the hassle of West. Its like the John Lewis of Holloway with even better customer satisfaction because I don’t have to have made weeks appointment before I can get my make up done. The store is only about two floors but has variety of things. On first floor you will find Topshop, Dorothy Perkins, make-up, bags, shoes and other Top brands. On the top floor, the store has home ware including cookware and kids toys. The staffs give you their total attention and I can find the big make-up, perfume counters I need there. I love the fact that I don’t have to queue for anything and its ideal place to buy gifts and things for home. Its worth visiting here sometimes, especially if Holloway is not far from you.
