I visited Ma’Plucker for a Unilocal event — the festive afternoon tea. We were kindly given a complimentary festive afternoon tea each. The experience started with a boozy iced tea. And when they say boozy, they mean boozy — this baby had 5 shots in it(bourbon, vodka, gin, rum and tequila) and was available in either lemon or cranberry. I went for cranberry. It was very potent, haha! For the remainder of our time in the restaurant we could help ourselves to bottomless non-alcoholic iced tea in lemon or cranberry. I liked the lemon. The food was served on a little tray and comprised of 3 different chicken sliders and 3 mini desserts. There was a mini festive chicken sub, mini rotisserie chicken and mini pulled chicken. Each managed to be very different, and the rotisserie had an unexpected spicy kick! Delicious. My favourite was the festive sub, I love a bit of cranberry with my chicken. The desserts were mini doughnuts with salted caramel sauce(pro tip: eat these while they’re still warm), a mini Yule log(some people raved about this but I’m not a huge fan of these generally) and a mini mince pie(my favourite, I love a good mince pie!). After, we were treated to some ice cream sundaes to share(not part of the tea, these are charged separately). These were really unusual and delicious, in popcorn and cornflake flavours(not just the toppings, the ice cream as well!) And I couldn’t resist trying the fried halloumi. You chose your accompaniment and sauce — I went for waffles and maple chilli glaze. The portion was huge and it was delicious — brilliant value at £4.50! Although this is primarily a chicken restaurant the halloumi makes it very vegetarian friendly! The service was friendly and attentive, and the décor simple but nice. The bathrooms are particularly interesting(in a good way!). I was very impressed with Ma’Plucker and will definitely be back for more halloumi or to try the regular afternoon tea(which has a very interesting sounding dessert on it…) Did I mention they have a loyalty scheme?

I need no second invitation for fried chicken, so when one of Unilocal buddies invited me to join him at Ma’ Plucker, it was an instant yes They cover the range of chicken — buttermilk fried, rotisserie and unusually, pulled chicken. The extensive menu combo choices were a bit confusing when we visited though they may have fixed it as we suggested changes to give less choice eg fried chicken should go with waffles rather than pulled chicken Our favourite was the fried chicken. Moist and juicy. Rotisserie was also nice but the pulled chicken wasn’t anything special. We also suggested a dish offering all 3 types of chicken on one platter Always nice to find root beer on a menu and the popcorn sundae was a great way to end the meal

Never really heard of this place before coming here for lunch. Thought it was going to be an average chicken shop! But interior is warm and inviting, although the wallpaper is a little trippy — we sat in the little section at the back which felt like being in a psychedlic cave. Service was great and attentive, the waitress was friendly and new her way around the menu. Food was good, we had the buttermilk crispy chicken with maple waffles and bbq sauce, rotisserie chicken with gravy and salad, ‘crack n cheese’(like the Italian arancini fried rice balls but with macaroni filling instead), slaw, sweet and salty popcorn sundae and Ma’s apple dumplings(like warm apple pie without the pastry but a couple of dumplings instead, topped with couple scoops of icecream). Drinks we had the Ma’s special ice tea(alcoholic), and because it’s American themed there’s also root beer and Dr.Pepper. I know… soooo much food it’s crazy. Felt like good ol’ home cooking though which is great. Prices on par with Nandos, I prefer Ma’Plucker!

A newcomer to the US-style chicken scene, Ma Plucker is pretty straightforward and as you’d expected. Located on Beak St(ha, I get it!), it’s a pretty homely venue with the trademark Soho cosiness, accentuated by the shack-esque décor. Unfortunately, I didn’t see a way of ordering all three types of chicken at the same time, so I felt a little bit gipped by the 3-way chicken headline, and I’m sure there’s a creative way to put chipotle rubbed roast/buttermilk fried/pulled chicken together in one dish. You choose a base: home bun, salad, or a waffle, a sauce(gravy, chilli, maple glaze…), and your chicken. The prices are pretty reasonable: £10 for a half chicken, £7 for a buttermilk thigh, and £7.50 for 250g of pulled chicken — given that fried chicken these days can get pretty expensive, it’s nice to see somewhere aiming at the cheaper end. I had the fried chicken bun with gravy — the fried chicken ticked all the boxes: good flavour, crispy, and the meat hadn’t dried out(part of this is because I go for thigh, but good job nonetheless). I thought the bun could have been better as it wasn’t quite as fluffy as I’d want, but that’s just me being picky. The gravy was good and there was a lot of it(in a gravy boat!) — not quite Clutch standard, but a great chip dip. I was a bit disappointed by the slaw — it wasn’t bad, it was just… very average. A bit heavy on the mayo and not a particularly exciting combination of textures. However, overall it was pretty satisfying and I’d be up for going back and trying their other things. Overall, a good experience with friendly service and a nice feel, although my particular meal was overshadowed by a pretty misogynistic convo going on between the group opposite me. Fun times. In terms of value and quality, Ma is great(I mean, it’s pretty much the same price as Nando’s and unquestionably higher quality, so…), so I can highly recommend it.

Don’t be chicken, this is a spot to check out. I’ve been by here a few times but never walked in. Shame too, because this is an excellent spot for excellent chicken. It’s small. But feels very at home intimate(mostly because it’s decorated to look like the inside of a homey kitchen). The menu is small, but packed with options. It’s basically all chicken, all the time, but you can get it in any way you’d like. I got delicious buttermilk chicken and my gal got chicken fried steak, but damn good. And filling. There are also a slew of sides you can get. Some, like the mashed poets are spot on. Others, like the corn, which were sadly tiny and cut into tiny pieces, were a little disappointing. I like big hearty corn with my delicious southern meal. But whatever you do, do not miss the crack and cheese, which is fried mac and cheese. Holy woah to that one. But overall, an excellent menu for lovers of everything chicken. Really, the only thing I wish they had on the menu that they don’t is a ranch sauce. Dear god I love ranch sauce on my chicken. And then of course for dessert, they have a cornflake sundae, which has both cornflakes on top and is cornflake ice cream, making it one of the best ice cream sundae’s I’ve had in London. Wing it over there now, you will not be sad.

Recently opened Ma Plucker is all about the chicken. Situated on the aptly named Beak Street it is located at the quieter end of the street with a black painted front which doesn’t do it any favours in drawing people’s attention. The interior is nicely done, very light, lots of chicken themed things including some cages… Menu is good — a base of waffle, bun or salad, a choice of chicken(fried, roasted or pulled) and then a choice of sauce. Unfortunately the waffle maker had broken so I had to try the bun. A good bun, good pulled chicken and delicious bbq sauce. My boyfriend had the fried chicken thigh — looked a bit overdone but the chicken itself was nice — with a chilli maple glaze which was great! The sides of coleslaw and crack and cheese were overpriced for the small portions but nothing wrong with the flavour! The afternoon tea menu does look great as does the desserts menu but not somewhere I would be running back to in a hurry based on my first experience.

The place was completely empty on a Sunday late afternoon /early dinner time. But the craving for chicken and waffles did not stop me and my friend. Maybe its because we are American. I would just like to say having a lady chicken serving you fried chicken… with little chicks posing in front of the shop is a bit cruel — Reminds me of Bojack Horseman’s gentle farms chicken episode. The ‘crispy coated buttermilk dipped’ chicken wings were way bigger than I expected and boy they were really good! They werent lying about the crispiness and the flavor. I didnt even put any of the sauce on it, I just used the chipotle chili sauce for the fries. Im definitely coming back for more!

Just opened a few weeks ago, the food was pretty good with reasonable pricing. Restaurant was completely empty on a Sunday evening, we went here because Flat Iron had a 1 hour queue at that point… You pick a bun/waffle/salad, a sauce or gravy, and a meat — we went for 2 sets of wings between 3 people — the wings were pretty big for the price(3 for £6 with the sides/sauces) Would recommend the waffles over the bun, as you’re essentially just getting an empty brioche burger bun with a few leaves and a bit of sauce in it which doesn’t really work well with wings. Would be nice if you could get fries as the side, but I guess they probably want to sell more of those. Doesn’t accept AmEx.
