There seems to be a lot of hype about this place in Herne Hill so I thought I’d give it a try. I went to grab a quick take-away lunch today and it felt overwhelmed with three staff and maybe four people dining in and two people in the queue, not a great sign for service. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich and it was okay, but certainly not worth £4.25. Definitely not worth the hype in food quality or service.

Its a real shame that the management haven’t capitilised on the captive market they have. Lots of cheap, chintzy dry goods and poor quality cured meats, cheese and dreadful bread. The interior is very badly layed out, the staff don’t usually know their ar@e from their elbow and the American woman who owns it is clearly insane as well as rude and obnoxious. The one redeeming point is that the chef isn’t bad. Vastly overpriced for the quality of food and the area. Stay well clear unless desperate. The store near Herne hill station is more pleasant and if you’re after quality food go to Lordship Lane.

I popped into Mimosa today to buy a couple of things. As usual the window and counter display were lovely but, as usual, the person serving on the till was rude, arrogant and made me feel as if I was not really wanted in their shop. I experience this each time I go into Mimosa and each time I promise myself that I’ll not go there again — and, indeed, don’t for some weeks, when I again pop in(it’s just round the corner) always with dread. Sorry Mimosa but this time my absence will be for good until I actually gate waved in off the street by an assistant who has learnt to smile and connect with the customer.

As soon as you see the window display, you are enticed to go in! There are range of olives, at the shop front that look like they have been freshly picked from a garden in Italy. There is a wide range of organic Mediterranean spreads & sandwich fillers that all look yummy. They also do hand-made pastries/biscuits and have a vast range of condiments. The organic scrambled eggs with toast is my fav. The eggs are so light and fluffy, and water in your mouth. Compliment this egg brunch with a nice cup of organic filter coffee. They have a nice quiet outside seating area which can cater for about 12 – 15 people which has a roll out shelter for when it is raining. You can also smoke outside at the tables, which is always a plus for those smokers. I The staff are very friendly and cater to your every need. They give a great service with a smile, so If your in the area, have a try for yourself — You won’t be disappointed. I wasn’t!

Not the cheapest and not the widest of selections but what they have is good. All too easy to be tempted by something.

Living around the corner from Mimosa is dangerous — it’s not the cheapest of places to pick up your deli items, said deli items, cakes etc aren’t the lowest calorie snack you could be buying for yourself and the garden is so gorgeous I could be tempted to sit in it all day ordering brownies and tea and not do any work. But oh, the brownies! The garden! The lovely lovely food! I’m just going to have to accept that once in a while I need a treat, and that treat is Mimosa. I encouraged a friend to take me there for breakfast recently and while he sensibly chowed down on the creamy mushrooms on toast I chose the chocolate brownie with a frothy latte and was a very happy lady. You have to support local businesses, don’t you!

Mimosa is a nice deli on Moon Lane. Like most other specialty neighbourhood delis it has a wide selection of gourmet spreads, sauces, jams, pastries, meats and wines. Their pastry case looks absolutely delicious. The glass and all. It glows with goodness. Their prices aren’t too cheap but aren’t incredibly expensive either. It’s a good place to stock up on all your gourmet goods. You can have a nice chat with the American vegetarian meat handler while you wait for her to package your ham.

The table of olives in the window was the thing that tempted me into Mimosa Deli. But it was the fresh salad bar and smell of falafels and houmous that kept me there. Mimosa is a takeaway and eat in deli specialising in Mediterranean foods, with a fantastic array of chocolates, biscuits, cheese and spreads. The café is warm and inviting and even has wireless internet access, and the food served is freshly prepared and totally delicious. Mimosa also provides an external catering service, perfect for informal finger food buffets

We sat outside and enjoyed the good service and spent an afternoon car watching in London. Our food was great. Their hummus platter was an excellent starter. My salmon salad had a huge piece of grilled salmon. We also had a grilled platter with a combination of g rilled chicken and sausages, with veggies. For a sweet treat– we had to try the grilled pineapple with coconut ice cream. All very reasonably priced. Mimosa is a nice change from the typical London pub foodfish and chips with those mashy peas. This is a great tucked away secret!
