Food was mediocre compared to the price. The gay waiters couldn’t stop bothering me and even asked me out on a date. Now would this shit happen if I was an attractive woman with a hetero male waiter? He’d probably get fired. Why do gay men feel so empowered to have their own standards?

10:30pm and we arrived at the restaurant — 11 people, not drunk but hungry. Taken to the back room and shown a large table with a lazy susan on it we were seated once a couple of extra chairs had been added. We weren’t the easiest bunch to deal with but they took it in their stride although with perhaps a little irritation…(We ordered, we changed our minds, we asked to split the bill after ordering, we didn’t listen when the food arrived, we couldn’t all remember what we ordered…) Drinks and food were ordered and then we hit a slight snag. Those that had ordered things like starters and peking duck got theirs straight away, while those with just mains had to wait. However I don’t think we’d made it clear we wanted everything at once. Never mind. My beer was fine(Tsingtao as we were in a Chinese restaurant) and I ordered special fried rice and baby squid in prawn paste sauce. The fried rice was fine(possibly not special) but with a good ratio of stuff to rice. The baby squid however… It was a good dish, tasty, hot and exactly what I wanted(squid, veggies and sauce to go with the rice) BUT these weren’t baby squid, these were quite obviously squid rings. I didn’t complain, we were all eating and had our food, it was now past 11pm and time was short. And like I said, it tasted good. Just shy of £20 for 2 dishes and a beer, probably with service, a decent enough meal.

When I came to London years ago no one in the Chinese restaurants seemed to know what I meant when I asked about added msg, so I stopped eating Chinese out. Good for my cooking skills, sad for variety and my friends. So when we came in here and the people not only knew what I was talking about, but could confidently tell me what they could and couldn’t make without msg, I was thrilled. And they were nice! I think he was the manager, but he was really sweet and helpful. And the food was good. This is also very critical of course. A tasty Chinese meal that I could eat without getting sick — i will definitely be back!

Today, I went to evening dinner with a date. As I recall, I had a great time eating here a few years back when I ordered the set menu for 4 people. Today, was a similar day on a Friday where it gets semi busy, despite waiting for 10 minutes or so, there was a table set up for 2 quite quickly. For the food, we ordered Set Menu A for two including sweet corn soup, sweet and sour pork, mixed sea food vegetables(basically squid, bean sprouts and chinese leaf cabbage), chicken in oyster sauce and fried rice. To be honest, it wasn’t as I remembered, as I started eating through the dishes, the majority was pretty bland and dire as I have acquired tastes especially with chinese food. The soup didn’t have the sweet corn kick and was watery, the seafood vegetables and chicken dish was in the same calibre, being bland and plain in flavour, no intensity in the flavours nor seasoning and the sweet and sour pork was OK sweet but a little soggy. It was pretty bad and if it wasnt the atmosphere and my date, I would of left the dishes half finished. It was cheap at 10.80 pounds per person but the quality was not there at all. Try and avoid unless you order the more expensive dishes or set menu.

Tried it for lunch based on the glowing recommendations and found myself disappointed. The atmosphere is dingy and slightly dodgy, especially the restrooms. The food was low quality and small portioned. Lots of little add-on’s and up-charges made for a substantial bill that’s not worth the type of meal you get. I would pass. There are far more intriguing options in the area.

Very average unless the normal cook was out the night we ate there. We had the duck and it was good, but not special. Soup, dumplings, and spring rolls were all plain.

Regret not trying out this place with my friends, they went here late at night after going out and said the food here was really good. One of my friend even got to go orders on our last day in London, that means something.

Pros: Peking duck, egg rolls, Singapore noodles, house wine Meh: onion ginger beef, lemon chicken. Cons: décor Overall a decent Chinese place i would expect to find in the suburbs in the USA, not london Chinatown. Decent meal with the family before a show.

We found ourselves with an extra day in London on our trip to the UK thanks to a flight cancellation, and went on a quest for ethnic food we can’t find in our current hometown. The initial plan was Indian, but when that went awry, we headed to Leicester Square in search of authentic Chinese. Mr Kong is clean and nice inside, but not too fancy. The menu is enormous– it took us a while to decide what to order. Prices were very reasonable(under £10 for most dishes). We ended up with: –spring rolls: these were more flavorful than any spring roll I’ve ever had, with a very light but crispy shell. –plain fried noodles: one of the best side dishes I’ve ever tasted. I could have had this as my entrée and been very happy. –fried chicken in chili bean sauce: my husband ordered this one. It wasn’t as spicy as he was promised, but the flavor was excellent. –beef slices with ginger and spring onions: I really enjoyed this dish– I believe it’s what western«Mongolian beef» is aspiring to be. The beef was fried perfectly(not soggy or crispy), the sauce was flavorful and there was a generous helping of large slices of ginger. I don’t know if you can go wrong in this neighborhood, but I’d be happy to find myself here again.

Really great option for vegetarians. I was worried there wouldn’t be many veggie options as it was a Chinese restaurant but so many choices. I had the mock crispy duck pancakes. Hadn’t had that since turning veggie. And the mock sweet and sour pork was great too

Solid spot for authentic Chinese food in Chinatown. And by solid, I mean you will probably be a bit thirsty after your meal but you won’t have diarrhea.(Sorry, it had to be said as some Chinese food places go a bit crazy on the grease level and sensitive stomachs pay the price.) Good seafood lo mien, good kung pao chicken and good veggie dishes(morning glory). Service is fast and friendly. Tea refills come quick and there is a complimentary orange at the end of your meal with hot wet wipes to clean your dirty paws.

Came here, and like the reviews say, the duck was great. Everything else, however, I wasn’t really impressed by. The dumplings were fine, but the soy sauce they came with was extremely salty so I ended up eating them plain. Ordered the char Sui pork but wasn’t really impressed by that either, the pork seemed a bit. old? And again was drowned in overly salty soy sauce. Also had the crispy fried chicken Cantonese style, but I didn’t enjoy this much either as it wasn’t really to my taste.(cooked on the bone and served with all the bones inside as well) I’m sure it would’ve been nice if that’s what you were after though! I think we expected better after seeing all the great reviews but I honestly think there are better places in China town. Also the service was a big let down, had to ask for tap water twice before it was brought to us — by then I had long finished my beer and my actual meal. The waiters didn’t come over to see if the meal was okay or anything.

Came here based on reviews, and wasn’t all that impressed. The grilled pork dumplings were tasty, if a little too stuffed full for my taste, and the quarter duck was nice as well! The char siu pork was… okay, and the fried half chicken was nothing special. I wasn’t all that happy with the service. We asked for tap water after we’d finished our beers, and the waitress walked off and forgot about it. It took us ages to grab someone else’s attention to ask again, and the place wasn’t particularly busy. I’ve definitely eaten at better places in Chinatown. Don’t think I’d bother with this one again.

Went based on the other reviews and was not disappointed. Started with the spare ribs, which was London style versus US style, a dry grill that I personally prefer. The ribs were very tasty without being drenched in sauce and there was not too much fat. Almost ordered a second portion I enjoyed them so much. Then I had the crispy aromatic duck(½). This dish was also quite good. A meaty half duck that the server shreds in front of you. You get pancakes, scallion, cucumber and hoisin sauce that you use to prepare the deck yourself. I was impressed that they actually provided enough pancakes for all the duck. In the future I may go with peking duck, where the skin is not shredded with the duck but no complaints. What solidified the ranking was the service. Unless some Chinatown restaurants, they did not treat customers like tourists. They were very friendly and helpful, the same you would expect in a neighborhood restaurant.

Great food, great service, great value for money, would definitely recommend this place! Try the crab, delicious! Update Visited again after a few months and I felt that the food here wasn’t as good as it used to be… And the price also seemed to have raised?

I came here because of Unilocal recommendations, and I’m glad I did. The place looks a bit shabby, but the staff is friendly and the food is great. Moreover, it’s an excellent place for vegetarians, as next to the vegetarian standards, they have a full sheet of ‘mock’ dishes. Out of curiosity, I had to try the ‘mock duck’ — and it was great. I don’t know what they made it from, but it was nice and crispy and came with pancakes and a nice sauce. We also had nice soups, and my girlfriend ate the sweet ‘n sour pork(not mock :(), and none of it let us down. Moreover, the staff was very kind and the waiter took time to make a little chat. A good recommendation if you’re around Leicester Square and are looking for some Asian food. The only thing is that the place seems to crowd up pretty fast(it was a Saturday evening) so you might want to be in time.

Vielleicht lieber was anderes bestellen.

I do love Mr. Kong. Especially appreciative after a day out of the city visiting a small town where everything was closing on a Sunday evening, we returned to London and the bustle and crowds of Chinatown to a late night Chinese comfort food dinner at Mr Kong. Wonton soup, sweet and sour chicken, stir fried spicy prawns, noodles and egg fried rice. This hit the spot nicely. The soup was great, as was the sweet and sour and spicy prawns. The menu is extensive and has lots of interesting options beyond the mainstream dishes we chose and I know from past experience, it’s all good and good value too for being right in the middle of town. Service was friendly and prompt and the food came quickly, just what we wanted, and it’s open till 3am.

We were a big group and had an absolutely great experience here. No problem with seating – we called for a reservation in advance(they don’t do online or by email). They were ready for us upon arrival. The service was spot on and accurate – we got what we ordered and the prices were right. My Peking Duck was one of the best I have ever had, it was just delicious and cooked perfectly with tender, moist meat and crispy skin. I loved it. The duck is a bit pricey but the rest of the menu I thought was very reasonable. Other people in the group liked their food too. The stars seemed to be the special fried rice and the won ton soup. This is my new go-to place for a group on London’s Chinatown.

many years — many time.
