This shop has been here asking as the long as the football team around the corner. The décor and the seating hasn’t changed since the 50s. The walls are covered in photos from same era and along with West Ham memorabilia. I’ve eaten in literally every single Pie n Mash shop in London and for its authenticity it’s one of the better ones. If I’m being very critical the mash and liquor is slightly aluminous and the pastry on the pie is a little thick and dry for me. However, I would say the quality of the meat and the staff make is a good pie shop.

Nathan’s is like the small mom and pop hamburger shops we have in many Nowheres-ville, USA places. In fact, it could be a spitting image. Brightly lit counters, boothed tables, menus that focus on just a handful of items, and the platoon of delicate, elderly ladies to take your order. Even the food are somewhat similar, just in a different construct. The beef mince pies? Well, that’s ground beef and some floured dough. And that’s a hamburger. Mash? Potatoes that have only simply met water instead of oil. So as you see, any American should feel right at home here, with comfort food that are related and with the atmosphere that reminds them of their hometown of Lost Springs, Wyoming. Oh, wait. The jellied eels. Alright, never mind about the similarities then. Served as segments in an undulating gelatin, made from the broth of boiled eels, they’re going to be mad strange to those from… well, Lost Springs, Wyoming for example. This might be the type of dish that only seriously food freaks will seek when traveling to London. I must say jellied eels do have a texture somewhere between snot and fish flesh, the flavor is a little salty but quite mild compared to canned tuna. I got them cold to compliment the warm pie and mash served in a parsley sauce, which at Nathan’s are both are extremely mildly spiced, but a dash of pungent white pepper enlivens it up. If still a bit squeamish about the fish, you can always get them hot though so as to prevent quivering, both you and the eels. Also, the queue is insane during West Ham games.
