I was very lucky to be invited for a birthday meal at a secret restaurant recently. Secret you say? Yes, secret. I really didn’t know what to expect but I knew it was going to be an interesting experience! I had no idea if would be an unused residence that was converted, or someone’s house. No clue. Following the directions, we walked down the very pleasant street in Holland Park to find our friend stood outside and we were ushered in. What a lovely lovely house! One room was converted for the night to a cloakroom and we were shown where to find the bathroom. All good so far. The restaurant itself is held in a living/kitchen/conservatory open plan room, tables and chairs ready for us. The chef(s) were busy at work in the kitchen upon our arrival. The lovely host served us some delicious champagne and Mexican style canapés — a hint at what was to come. We stood in the garden chatting until it was time to take our seats. The Nomad Chef introduced herself and explained the ethos behind her restaurant and the menu; Every week the menu is different, each week a new fusion theme. And boy was the food good! Fusion Mexican and possibly the most delicious home made chocolate cake I’ve ever had. The atmosphere and ambience was great — relaxed, fun and friendly. Some of us stayed until midnight chatting — the Nomad Chef was keen to be involved too — my last train was long gone! Our friend had privately hired for the night but the restaurant is open for business each Wednesday night and even some Sundays for brunch. It’s a £30 contribution for the food. It’s BYOB. I’m very keen to go back on a Wednesday or Sunday session — they apparently have many little groups, couples and individuals turn up; all willing to meet new people and have a lovely night. Do see the website for the upcoming dates and menus. What a rare treat in this city.
