The food is delicious. I was there several times and according to me the meals are great. The prices are good and everyone can taste from the wonderful Portigee dishes like the Piri-Piri prawns, the assorted grilled meats or the excellent Codfish cakes. It made me some impression the fact that the waiter was not so good in english. But may be he was nervous or kind of busy too. You should visit O Fado restaurant, you won’t regret it, it is really good place:)

I love Portuguese food. I went to Portugal only once in my life, for a two week vacation, and I was absolutely blown off by the quality of their ingredients, by the richness and temperament of their cuisine, by the inventiveness and variety of their fish dishes(mmmmh, bacalhau…), by how cheap, in addition to delicious, everything was. After going to Portugal I lived in Italy four more years, and I often thought about Portuguese food, only to be frustrated by the fact that there is not a single Portuguese restaurant in Milan(or nearby…). As soon as I arrived in London, though, I tried this place, and I wasn’t disappointed: I found the same quality, the same feeling… at a London price. I feel that this kind of food, in this kind of restaurant should be less expensive than that(if not, this would be a 5* place). The restaurant is a bit dark, and the general atmosphere is a bit old fashioned: it’s a very quiet place, on the lower ground of a nice Chelsea street. Not very good for families, but good for a date or a business meal. At the middle of the night expect a fado number: both times I went there I found that extremely pleasing, the singer was very good and the music melancholic and intense as it can be. I don’t necessarily need the«genuine» touch when I go to an ethnic/national restaurant, but if the music is not a cliché that can really improve the experience.

The waiter can’t speak proper English, but his goodwill and genuine smile surpasses the problem and he serves me nicely the all evening. The singer imposes silence for her to sing and I find it rude but only until I find myself shushing the couple next to me when their mobile rings in the middle of the song. The food doesn’t exactly look appealing on the plate and my eyes reject it but only until my palate discovers the pleasure of Portuguese flavours. What a gem of a restaurant. What a surprisingly evening.

The entrance of the restaurant(in a basement) doesn’t say much about what you are about to find. Down there, is like you are no longer in London, the waiters have a strong unknown funny accent, the food is not just pretty and no flavour but rather strangely mixed on the plate and scrumptiously flavoured. In the middle of dinner we had a charming lady singing a beautiful song in Portuguese. The Portuguese tiles with Lisbon images and the dancing light candles make it really inopportune to come up the stairs and be in London again. Either you want to go back inside for another Portuguese custard tart, or you want to take the next plane to Portugal. This restaurant is a lovely way of meeting another country, without wasting as much money.
