This little pub has recently had a makeover as an Irish bar with seats made out of barrels and the obligatory Guinness theme. Perhaps because its new, the place currently lacks character and seems a little sterile/try-hard. I went in for a drink and wasn’t encouraged to stay for another, much preferring the other options Camberwell has to offer. There seemed to be quite a few locals inside with shouty banter going on between them — this was an added turn-off but one that may have been unique to the day I was there. In general, I don’t like Irish pubs, unless they’re in the country itself. They feel forced and as such lack essential character, which the Old Dispensary is an example of.

Had I been writing this review four years ago I would be telling you how this polished Sex and the City style cocktail bar was the much needed addition to South London. For some disappointing reason they shut it down despite being wildly popular. Several years on and The Old Dispensary has reopened losing its chic cocktail list for traditional beer selling Irish pub with barn like décor and a kitchen serving Thai food. They are obviously trying to appeal to a different demographic. Why, I am not quite sure. I may be biased and slightly resentful of the new owners but I will not be rushing back. If however, you are more of a beer drinker and would love a bowl of Pad Thai to accompany, then The Old Dispensary is for you. After all it is still quite nice for a pub and the staff are as friendly as you will find.
