I would have taken a picture of the cup cake I bought here but I ate it a bit quick, so all you’ve got is the paper bag it came in. For less than a pound, you can gobble down a moist carrot fairy cake with fabulously fluffy frosting. Mmm… frosting. On a street of pretentious cafés and restaurants, this is a little window of east London’s roots. If you crave more, try The Broadway Caff a few doors down.

Embodying the yuppie/cockney dichotomy that is Hackney, this branch of Percy Ingle sits directly opposite the up-market bakery of Climpson & Sons. It’s silly to try and say which establishment is «better» — there are so many factors on which that call can be made. Undoubtedly, Climpson provide better quality. But do they provide better value? I’d argue no. For just over two quid you can get a steak pasty and an apple and blackcurrent slice. That’s a lot of happiness per pound. The bread’s pretty good too. And cheap.
