As children me and my sisters were brought up wearing clothes from Petit Bateau because they were simple, casual and not expensive enough for it to matter whether they got dirty at play-dates. Some 20 years later, I still sometimes go to the store on South Molton Street as I discovered a few years ago that their female ranges go up to a(large) 16 year old and are just about big enough to still fit me. Don’t get me wrong– I am by no means petite, but their oldest age range of clothes is quite large and is good for vest tops, t shirts and cardigans.(and are also very cheap)

I most certainly don’t know much about children wear. I can’t say if these clothes are something that a mum would appreciate when it comes to changing diapers or using tumble dryer. I can’t tell you what is the size range or measuring either. Wouldn’t know. All I know that these clothes are pretty and that makes this label good present material. It is a store where a city girl can pop in every time her friends have delivered baby news. Not too pink for girls, no frill or barbie pictures. Almost elegant if you can describe kids wear with that adjective? Also a a lot of white colored baby clothes which is refreshing at least. They will wrap the present nicely and voila!

If you associate Petit Bateau exclusively with pricey French childrens’ clothes then you’re missing a trick. This is where the yummy, the mummy, and those in the know get their fix of chic, casual French garb on select British high streets. Yes, Petit Bateau primarily specialises in timeless kids wear but lurking in most stores is also a rail or two dedicated to shoppers rather older; rails bursting with pure cotton breton stripe tees and classic wool pea coats, silk and cotton wrap tops and minimalist sweaters. Push aside your preconceptions, pull down your shades and get thee to Petit Bateau. In terms of classic, well made basics you’ll never look back.
