What an odd morning my Saturday trip to Powerflex Studio made for. I had no idea what to expect. It is one of those odd gimmicky fitness things that is there, so I must try. Powerflex uses powerplate machines, TRX, kettlebells, and weights to get you into shape. Powerplate machines look like the lovechild between an elliptical and a giant, flat boulder. The main premise is that you stand, plank, step, or lean on the machine while it vibrates really quickly, making your muscles work extra to keep you stabilized. I’m uncoordinated and can tell you that you have no major risk of falling off, at least no more so than on a regular gym machine(I’ve done it before). The studio itself is somewhat difficult to find. Once you find the door, you need to be buzzed up. The room is small but full of really all the equipment you need to get a great workout. There are only three powerplate machines in there, I believe. I am not sure what the typical sessions look like, but mine was just with one other person and a trainer. It’s amazing to get personalized attention and the trainer was friendly and really gave me a great workout. It wasn’t the highest intensity cardio, but you will sweat and more weight work can be added to up your burn. I was surprisingly sore the day after, so I’d believe that the whole stabilizing concept works on some level. There was a man there who was rehabbing from an injury who has found it a really great alternative to running or other higher intensity exercise. Definitely check it out if you’re looking for something different.
