:me walking home at 16:30: [stomach growl] ‘Hm, I’m hungry. How much money do I have?’ :checks purse(60p): ‘Bugger.’ . . . ‘Aha! The fruit and veg stand at Queen Square! Perfectly ripe pear, 30p. Bargain!’ :nom nom nom: This is the best fruit and vegetable stand I’ve come across in Central London. There is many a fruit stand on my walk home from the Strand, but infrequently does one find vegetables as well. This stand has it all. And it’s all excellently priced. And it’s all ripe and ready for eating/cooking. The quasi-isolated location in Queen Square means that you can browse around the abundantly stocked baskets either for a quick fruit bite or for dinner-time inspiration without being hassled along by commuters near, say, the stands at Holborn station. One time I got a red bell pepper the size of my head for £1.10. Seriously, that pepper was no joke. It was the king of peppers. The stand was closed down for the winter months, but now it’s back with a vengeance! That 30p pear I just ate was a pear of gods. I always buy my fresh fruit and veg from this stand whenever possible, because the price is nearly always at least half of what you’d find in the grocery store and the product is nearly always at least twice as good. If this fruit stand packed up and moved somewhere away from my stomping grounds, a little part of me would die of grief. It was hard enough just getting through the winter.
