My favorite… mushroom burger with cheese, delicious! I just love it! They only have 2 tables, but you can always do take away, grab a drink on the Tesco across the road and head off to Soho Sq for an al fresco lunch. A great alternative to McDonalds where you can take your vegan friends!

I am a huge meat eater. I want my steaks red, my chicken breasts big, and the turkey on my sandwiches measured in centimeters of stacking. And I loved this hearty, filling, satisfying veggie burger. I had one of the pricier versions, and it was delicious.

«You know what would make this burger better?» my friend asked. «What?» “Bacon.“ Granted, this kid carries around a wallet that looks like a slice of bacon, but he ate this veggie burger. I enjoyed my mushroom burger. We found the fries rather average. In summary: inexpensive and needs to open a location in the States, because it’s by far superior to most of the vegan fast food I’ve choked down there.

I rocked up outside this place and thought ‘Jeez what kind of dumpy kebab shop have these broads picked this time?’ Inside looks like your standard greasy chipper with a few tables and a drinks freezer. It ain’t the Ritz people. Which is fantastic ‘cos the Ritz is full of total asshats and it doesn’t have unbelievably rockin’ veggie fast food. Do you know how many years I have gone eating chips while my meat eating friends scoffed burgers and hot dogs in front of me. NOMORE! I had a veggie hot dog here smothered in ketchup and it was so good, you can slap my ass and call me a commie!

A friend and I just popped into this little restaurant off of Oxford Street and had a delicious lunch. The menu is small with a few types of vegetarian burgers, hot dogs, and a few other items. Check out the website for the full menu. I had the ChiliVeg burger with cheese and my friend had the MushroomVeg. Super yummy burger with the works on it and just the right amount of spicy from the chili inside. This is definitely more of a lunch joint than dinner as it only has three 2-person tables and most of the patrons came in for take away burgers. Oh, and price? Burger + drink less than £5!

Quick, cheap, indulgent(but not TOO indulgent) vegetarian grub for those vegetarians who hate being excluded from carnivorous fast-food vices and for those omnivores who like a change from the usual. Love the vegan mayonnaise. Why is Red Veg not open late on Friday and Saturday night for post-pub crawls?

Communist Vegetarian Fast-Food Who’d-a-funked-it? It works and is great for takeaway food on the go. The one in Brighton rock too as they have more seats. My meat eating French brother-in-law can’t get enough of it.

What can you say about a communist-themed vegetarian fast food restaurant? I have never been a health food vegan. I grew up eating meat, and like the taste, just not the whole slaughterhouse step. So, Red Veg(slogan: «Proper Fast Food,») and their vegan fast food is pretty much the perfect solution for me. And, if it’s served in view of towering kitschy(?) posters of Mao and Lenin, all the better. At least in my memory, Red Veg is tiny, really little more than a counter and a couple of very busy tables, and is staffed by **actual** dour eastern Europeans who scowl at you throughout your order, then plunk your food down unceremoniously on the counter and shout«REDVEGWITHCHEESE!» At which point, if you did not leap up and scramble to collect it, they would get even angrier, and shout«REDVEGWITHCHEESE, PLEASE!» And then you’d be too scared to get it at all. If you are a vegetarian in London, or you’re just into unusual experiences and communist kitsch, you can’t go wrong with a ChilliVeg burger and a side of Spicy Baby Corn Firesticks. And the fries. And the breaded mushrooms. Seriously, it is lucky that I don’t live in the neighborhood any more, because I would be FAT. The best thing about Red Veg: Were they kidding? Was it performance art with really amazing food? I am still not sure.

I wish they would open a Red Veg here, it was my weakness when in London. I love their take on a fast food menu, which mixes it up a bit from the standard. They are not a vegan restaurant, but very very vegan friendly. If I could, I would open one in Boston in a heartbeat. Although, that may easily lead to a significant weight gain, so maybe it’s good if this stays a six hour flight away.

I was vegan for a couple of years and this was one of my favourite almost guilty pleasures. I say almost because there’s nothing actually wrong with Red Veg, it’s just that it seems wrong because of its fast food status, which you normally associate with McDonalds and the like. So it has the amazing ability of abating your craving, whilst keeping your conscience intact. You also don’t need to fret about what’s inside the burgers — no chicken ulcers or intestines here. And you don’t miss the meat. I’ve taken lots of meat-eating friends here who have approached the visit suspiciously only to leave satisfied and surprised. The burgers are filling and come in a variety of options –my fav is the chilli veg with cheese(no more veganism for me). There are also a variety of other options including falafels and hot dogs and a selection of side orders including chips and stuffed jalapeño peppers. The problem with the place is its layout and size. It’s tiny and only has four tables — 3 of which use the same metal(and pretty uncomfortable) bench. Getting in-and-out of the door is even a squeeze, but I’m not sure there’s a lot they can do about this. In the summer I’d advise you get a take-away and take it to somewhere nearby like Soho Square, but in the winter, if fast-food minus the guts is what you want then its still worth a visit.

Okay, from the outside this place is nothing to write home about and certainly doesn’t go out of it’s way to entice you in. To say it looks crap is an understatement. Yes, it’s only a tiny place but when the vegeburgers they sell are so good it wouldn’t take more than a lick of paint or two to spruce the place up and make it look less militant and more green. Anyway, for those that don’t fancy eating some grilled cow carcass this is a great alternative. Price-wise it’s on par with the known fast-food chains but the food is really tasty and usually cooked to demand so no food that’s been sitting there for half hour. As another alternative place in Soho it is recommended.

I would never step a toe into a MacDonalds but sometimes I have an urge to eat one. So I go to Red Veg. It’s vegetarian fast food and it’s actually really quite tasty. I go simple and have a red veg or a chilli veg with fries. They also have falafels, salads, veg hot dogs and sides. No points on décor I’m afraid. I don’t quite get the whole communist corporate identity although their tag line is «a revolution in food». Quite a sweeping statement but the philosophy is about eating less meat and being kinder to the planet. For that they get my vote and my money.
