Was recommended to me by a few people and the reviews are good. Unfortunately it didn’t quite work for us. The staff are great but the food was average. We had dumplings, sushi tartar, edamame and a few of the rolls including the crunchy tuna and dragon roll. I’m sure it would be great if you’re looking for a fast in-out or takeaway.

3.5 stars, but will reassess next time. I’ve been here once and I’ll definitely give it another try, but I will say we didn’t love it as the other reviewers seem to have. There was nothing wrong and everything was good, but it was just good. On a Friday night around 8 pm, there were only a few tables taken, the rest were available. It’s a pretty small place, though, so one big group or a few extra diners fills the place up quickly. In fact, one time we were attempting to go back to this restaurant to give it another try, but the entire place was booked out by a group of 20 people or so. There aren’t decorations, it’s pretty no frills, but it’s comfortable and clean. The tables are a light wooden color and the walls are white. Everyone had recommended the noodles here, saying it was the best they’d found or the best since Japan. Well we didn’t really feel that way. The yaki soba veggie noodles were good, but not amazing and pretty much on par with many of the other places we’ve tried. Kappa maki rolls are good, but I think a bit over stuffed with rice. I will definitely give it another try and I’m open to a better experience, but at the moment, it’s just sold food and not spectacular.

I’ve been here 4 or 5 times by now and I’m loving it every time. Prices are comparatively very low — the menu is just the perfect size. I never knew how good a simple Maki can be. I love the sets, they also make mean California style rolls(Soft shell crab!!). Ambience and service is very casual. This place caught my attention when we saw a party of Japanese business men in there — which seemed odd given the location. There was a good reason — great food! Absolute insider tip at the moment! I consciously posted this on TripAdvisor as well cause this place really deserves the great review.

East London definitely lacks good sushi places! Sakana Sushi offers good quality Japanese food for an affordable price! It’s a casual restaurant that doesn’t seat that many and mainly caters for local office workers during busy lunch hours. Therefore in the evenings there tends to be more availability! I’ve been fortunate enough to visit with my friend who dines there regularly and we get to taste dishes that aren’t actually on their menu. It’s lovely, highly recommend it!

Having moved to London from California where there are great sushi restaurants on every corner, I was missing my hole-in-the-wall sushi place. Not the conveyor belt places or the sushi-and-something-else combos, but a real sushi restaurant with the kind of food I was used to from back home. This place is exactly what I was missing. The chef comes directly from Japan and serves up good quality, tasty food for a very reasonable price. All of the staff is friendly and the atmosphere is casual and relaxing. It’s the kind of place I see myself popping in for a beer and some food on the way home from work or for a healthy lunch during the day. Who knows, maybe I will use their take out service and bring some snacks to my apartment for get-togethers with friends. If you find yourself in East London, I say definitely check them out.
