Only reason why I’m giving this a 4⁄5 is because so many Japanese restaurants in central London are just so rubbish. The food is authentic enough. The price reflects the real estate value of the area. The service is devoid of warmth and friendliness(I was forewarned about this). But the portions are on par with expectations for a genuine Japanese restaurant. Still haven’t found ramen that’s better than Ichi Ban Boshi in Sydney.

My first proper Japanese food in London — and I loved it. I’ve always been a fan of sukiyaki, which is somewhat like hot pot slash shabu shabu with slices of beef, veggies, and glass noodles in a soya sauce base of flavorful broth. I noticed on the menu that they had sukiyaki don(meaning rice), so of course, I had to try it. As guessed, it was an exquisite dish of the essence of sukiyaki laid out on a bed of rice. Not only was the taste quite proper but the portion was fulfilling as well. The menu in general had a good selection of Japanese dishes, ranging from a variety of don’s, noodles, rolls, and sushi. By London standards, the price felt reasonable as well. Last but not least, I quite liked the store exterior, though the inside was more uninspiring standard Japanese. Would recommend the place for a hot, yummy don after a couple hours of shopping in the Oxford Circus area.

We have just got home from a wonderful meal at Sakura. We ordered the tempura crab and a few tapas dishes followed by green tea Ice cream for desert all of the food was yummy. The staff were lovely and friendly but a little slow to notice when we needed serving, but overall we were very happy. Only thing I would say is that it is perhaps a little expensive for the small tapas portions but it was worth it for the quality/flavour and I’m sure we’ll back sometime soon to try more of the menu.

Sakura is the best Japanese restaurant in Mayfair. Reasonably priced and always fresh, the food is spectacular. TheTempura is light and fluffy, the sushi a masterful treat and the Wafu salad delicious. Although the staff may be curt it is merely an officious attitude. Excellent always.
