Shalamar Kebab House is an absolute treasure. Having been going for years to another curry place in Brick Lane that shall remain nameless, I felt really stupid to have stuck to that one for so long, having had dinner at Shalamar a couple of nights ago and again last night. The meals were blooming marvellous! Some will be put off by the non-restauranty look of the place, which is more like of a café, but if you don’t mind that, of if you, like me, like that kind of décor, you will have a swell of a meal. If not, go to Tayyabs down the street(Fieldgate St.) where the yuppies go for their curry experience, and where you cannot see a single Asian customer. We had three nan breads, which the chef cooked right there and then in sight of our table, chana(chick peas), meat sag(lamb with spinach) and some plain rice. Everything was excellent! I forgot to ask if customers are allowed to bring their own beers so I’m not sure that is the case, but I would guess so. As it was Ramadan we had the room for ourselves for a while, but the place filled up with local Asian couples and families once the sun went down. The owner told me they’re usually open until midnight, so I may just go there for a late night meal one of this days! After we finished our(very inexpensive meal) we asked if they had any sweets for desert. The chef apologised for not having any but offered to go and get some from a local sweet shop. We ended up declining his kind offer and satisfied our unreasonable need for sweets by walking to Brick Lane and getting some from there. Will go to Shalamar again, and again, and again…
