Ha e to say that people in London don’t write reviews on Unilocal, and that makes it hard to find al the goods spots, keeping them for locals and away from tourists, but ill go on and keep writing so people can visit some good places when they are here. Shampers is a wine bar with a really great wine selection. Very cozy. We ordered a chicken soup, oysters and steaks as our main. 1.the service is suuuuper SLOOOOW, so if u thinking about a quick dinner, forget about it. Soup was a bit too sweet but i guess that might be just a matter of taste. It was weird to get the oysters without the vinegar-onions sous on the side, but they tested fine

This is a lovely cosy winebar and restaurant in central London. I went for a meal with a largish group and was very impressed with the service. The food was also great — I had a perfectly cooked tuna steak, lovely and moist and pink in the middle. The only negative to the meal was that several of the menu options were unavailable. However, the staff were flexible and would allow menu options to be adapted(e.g, my tuna dish came with lentils which I do not particuarly like, but there was no problem at all swapping these for a potato dish). Also, there is very little choice for vegetarians — one of our group is vegetarian and there was only one starter option available(a goats cheese and bacon salad requested without bacon) and one main course that he could eat.

Overrated My parents and I visited this restaurant on April 20th. We chose it because it’s close to their hotel(Doubletree Courthouse), and made reservations for 7pm(which is helpful, they get quite busy). If you don’t like it loud, sit downstairs. The first thing we noticed, is the EXTENSIVE wine list, which, being a wine bar, was great. The Bordeaux, Château La Tour was a great find by the glass and I recommend it. The table bread was also quite delicious — warm and crusty with a nice soft inside. But, the food was not what I was expecting after reading all of these rave reviews here on TripAdvisor. We ordered three starters, the blue cheese and broccoli soup of the day, scallops, and the grilled calamari. Out of the three, the soup was the best. The scallops were gritty, and the calamari, while the taste was okay, was quite chewy. We ordered our mains: the sirloin steak, cod, and shrimp in a chili sauce. The steak was bland for a sirloin and the shrimp were also quite bland even with the chili sauce. The best of the three dishes was, by far, the cod which was fantastic. I also had chips with my steak that were quite good as well. So, it was not the best meal ever, and I’m still wondering why it gets these amazing reviews, but if you stick with the cod and soups of the day you’ll be fine on food. If I return, I plan to only get wine and their amazing warm bread.

Went here in a group of 7 for dinner last week, very impressed by the food, drinks and service Steak frites was excellent following on from the chilli garlic prawns to start and the wine was lovely(I stuck to malbec), the 2 bottles of port taken down at the end pushed the night into halcyon territory recommended!

I came here for my London offices Christmas party and had dinner and drinks. The food was pretty good. The staff was friendly and helpful. We ended up staying and having a little too much to drink(not out of hand but definitely glad all I had to do is walk back to the hotel). I’m typically a traditional ale drinker while in the UK but this served my taste for good red wine while I was here.

26 Oct 11: I found Shampers while walking around in the area before going to Masala Zone for dinner. I’m not a beer drinker(you will find a pub on most corners in London) so I was happy to have found Shampers. It was happy hour and there were lots of people inside(as well as outside) enjoying their wine after their work day. I was able to grab a stool at the bar and chatted with a few near me. I ordered a glass of red and then waited and waited and waited. The young woman that took my order disappeared while two others were busy serving other people. It took me a while to get the attention of one of the bartenders. I explained I had not received my wine and she asked who took my order. «I haven’t seen her since she took my order, which was about 20 minutes ago.» So she poured my wine and later asked me if I wanted another. I was thankful she kept an eye on my glass. When I asked for the bill and received it, it showed just one glass. I told her the bill was incorrect, that I had two. She said because I didn’t get my first glass in a timely manner she took it off the bill. Nice! I’m rating this as average simply because of the poor service of the first bartender. Why take my order and then not follow through? The second one that took care of me was great. Thanks!

Had a gorgeous December dinner here with friends. Everyone was right — there’s no place like London during the holidays, and this place was the epitome of that. Festive décor(including crackers on the table) was just right; the venue is cozy and warm, with delicious, belly-filling food and an excellent selection of wine(that starts around £19/bottle). Service was good, and the warm basket of bread to start is worth writing home about(or writing to Unilocal anyway). I had the Grilled Vulscombe Goats Cheese Salad with Walnut Oil Dressing and Bacon(£7 on the starter menu): utterly fabulous though definitely on the indulgent side, with enormous hunks of sizzling bacon and a dollop of breaded and fried goats cheese. My friends had a pâté platter that included a selection of gourmet deli meat slices. And that bread! We went through two baskets.

Pleasant bistro type wine bar in Kingly Street. The seating is a little cramped, especially as winter draws in and people have coats etc. Extensive and slightly pricey wine list. Fairly compact menu but decent food. Service is friendly. Not my absolute favourite but I’d happily go back.

Well this was a mistake. So many options in the area it can be confusing but let me save you the time and chose somewhere else if you out and about shopping and a small group. I ordered a hamburger which came in a pita and a bunch of onions. Not appetizing at all, the burger itself wasn’t not what I expected which would have been a french styled put together burger, not this mess. This place seems like it’s more for larger groups. They have a huge space downstairs for private parties and a nice bar on the ground floor which I could see stopping for a drink but I would pass on the food. Oh yeah, and a plate for the bread might be a good idea.

I only went once for a glass of what was some pretty rockin Malbec for a steal at 4.75 a glass. The atmosphere seemed quaint and lovely and perfect for a date. I’m going to have to come back for some dinner, the food smelled and looked great.

Went here on a rainy day after walking the streets looking for some place to eat. Liberty of London is just down the street, so it was an easy walk. There are a lot of cool shops and pubs in this area, but Shampers looked the best. We were not disappointed. Although is seemed full, we were given a table on the condition that we needed to leave in an hour and a half. No problem! I ordered the grilled pork sausages with mash and red cabbage. So good! Had a local brew and my friends ordered the fish of the day which was also quite good. The waitress offered us dessert, but it was past our allotted time. The host came over and was very gracious and offered us seats at the bar. If you like good food, a decent crowd, and a hip area for shopping, this is it.

I came here for dinner on a Monday night and really enjoyed myself! I had the pesto ravioli as I wasn’t feeling too adventurous. It was really good. Pesto can go so wrong, and this definitely succeeded. At first glance the portion was very small, but it turned out to be just right. My friends got fish dishes(sea bass and cod) and also raved about them. For dessert I had the warm lemon tart with crème, which was delicious(though too much crème for my tastes). The only thing I’d have changed is that I typically prefer olive oil to butter for my bread.(Not a big complaint there.) Reasonably priced meals and drinks.

This place is ideal for a(pseudo sophisticated) second or third date or for old friends to meet and lose themselves for the evening. Grab yourself a nice cool french white wine(though I go for the New Zealand/Australian stuff myself) and nibble away at the nibbles. There is a restarant and a bar area. I confess I have only frequented the bar area and I have not eaten here. Friends of mine have and they liked it — especially the cheese platter. Great place to sit /stand and chat. Patrons and staff are all friendly.

I love Shampers, and I’m so happy that Unilocal is FINALLY in the UK so that I can post reviews on places that I visit during business trips. I’ve been to Shampers twice – both times with my husband and a different group of friends. I still really enjoyed my dishes and I know the first time we went we RAVED about the place. We were helped by the owner and sat downstairs away from all of the smoke, which was nice. The food was good. I had something with liver, which I usually hate. However, the dish was perfect. Overall, I think it’s a lovely restaurant and will return the next time I’m in town.

Definitely a rarity in central London — a French restaurant serving good affordable food with a smile. I just wish I could tell you all about it, but truth is I left here so ridiculously drunk that the next 12 hours of my life were a complete loss and the following 12 after that were a surreal ordeal. Don’t worry Unilocalers… I didn’t wake to find myself in an ice bath with one kidney removed(my liver maybe). The thing is that Shampers IS good for groups. Very Good. And every December a group of us hire out the bottom room for a 20+ people go at the set menu and all their wines. Too many wines. So if you’re looking for a good place for your next big group dinner I can heartily recommend Shampers from what memory brain cells I have left from that day. Just go easy when it comes to drinking games and Beaujolais, okay?

Get past the name — evoking images of ‘80s lush media types with bow-ties, big glasses or both — and this is a great little wine bar and restaurant. I recently took my two receptionists here for a drink and some nibbles(easy tiger !) after work one evening and thoroughly enjoyed it. Neither quite as sophisticated, not as expensive, as Dehesa a few steps away, Shampers seems to be maturing nicely in its third decade — the name gaining a tongue-in-cheek irony as time goes by, but the food and wine remaining excellent.

After a long day of shopping in Carnaby St and/or Soho stop by for some food and a nice glass of wine at Shampers. I sound like a 1990s advert. Service was friendly and welcoming, they even gave me and my friend a hand with all our heavy shopping bags(they weren’t that heavy but it was still very nice to be helped) First of all the wine. They have over 140 bottles to choose from, 40 of them by the glass(not for nothing they call themselves a wine bar); just because it was christmas I decided to go a bit crazy and spend £7.75 in a glass of La Bastide du Château Dauzac, AMAZING! All I have to say about that. My scrumptious glass of wine came in perfect harmony with Grilled Prawns with chilli, ginger, lemon olive oil(starter at £6.50) and the steamed argyll mussels, thyme & beer sauce(starter at £5.95), Everything looked so appetizing I ended up ordering two appetizers as one main. My only minor complaint, if it really is a complaint, is the décor. Bentwood chairs, white tablecloths & hunting-green walls want to create a homely ambience, but I think it fails at this. This aspect improved would earn this 30 year old place a golden star.

According to popular folklore this was the first place to bring decent wine to London. Shampers has always been popular with media folk but now attracts a very mixed crowd. It is still packed every night. Neither the décor nor the food menu have changed much since the 80’s. A bit short on vegetarian options, but very good value for money. Similarly great for dinners for two as for large parties.

Been here twice, both times with family and on both occasions the food was fantastic! I usually go for fish, having sampled the organic salmon I would highly recommend it. Overall be prepared for some really wholesome food and great service! It’s always busy there which is a result of dishing out some spectacular food so I would recommend you book before hand! and come hungry! Oh and may I also add they have a great selection of wine!
