Back home and happy to be in Sotheby’s. Definately a refreshing change from the States.

I went here last Friday for an art auction and it is such a gorgeous place. It is really fancy inside, red carpets, chandeliers and a doorman. You call ahead for tickets which are free to the auctions and you can go in during the day to view the works. Then when you arrive on the night, pick up the tickets from the ground floor and if like me you’re not bidding you go upstairs to the viewing platform which is right next to the main room. It is jam packed full of millionaires, outside the street is lined with bentleys and drivers, very over the top but if you’re going to buy an Andy Warhol for £3 million I suppose you need a driver to shuttle the painting home!

Infamous auctioneers which are British in origin(founded in 1744) that, along with Christie’s, share the monopoly on auctions for fine works of art on a global level. Friendly and informative receiptionists. It is possible to purchase catalogues at the Bond Street entrance. Valuations and requests for expertise are best directed to the George St. entrance, and one can often walk in off the street. They usually have a constant display for items from forthcoming auctions on show in their galleries on the premises, including Damien Hirst’s ‘Beautiful in my head forever’ auction last September. It is great just to pop in while shopping in the neighbourhood to have a break and see some art. The café is also pretty good, but I would recommend sitting inside it proper otherwise you can feel as though you’re caught in the coridoor slightly as it front the entrance way.
