If you’re thinking, «Man, I really need a tiny Eastern European woman to beat me to a pulp right now,» then this is the place for you! The reception staff is very friendly and accommodating; I called round 3:45 to see if they had any openings for massage that day(they are open until 11), and was told they could take me in ten minutes if I wished! I’m only staying a few blocks away so it was perfect timing. I went right over, filled out paperwork, and from the time I first had the thought of a massage to the time I was on the table was less than half an hour. The décor is simple, bordering on cheap. The store front is very much a giant advertisement, but there are the classic spa bits — golden statues of Hindu gods, incense burning in various places, and water served in little earthenware cups. When being shown to your room, you are led back through a tiny, though well lit, hallway and down some stairs into a funny little area that branches off in several directions and has several odd steps up and down, with a loo roughly the same size as the airplane version. The massage room itself is very bare, with the only decoration being a few dim wall sconces and a clock. The table ‘linens’ are really just mismatched towels with a soft paper sheet thrown over it(a bit reminiscent of a doctor’s office, but still comfy). The room seemed clean and well-cared for. My therapist, Giedne, was a small, friendly woman in black jeans and an oversized t-shirt. Having had most of my previous massages in proper day spas, I was a little put off by the casualness of it, but decided to just go with the flow. She showed me in, gave me time to dress, and began promptly. I had requested a deep tissue massage, and when she asked what kind of pressure I prefer, I said, «strong». And boy, she delivered! There were several times, especially when she was working on my shoulders and quads, that my eyes began to twitch and I had to concentrate on my breath. It was without a doubt the most intense massage I’ve ever had! There was the usual spa music in the background, but it didn’t sufficiently drown out the noise of the people moving about the hallways. Nonetheless, I got what I came for — relief! I felt like jelly by the end and whether or not I will have any bruises tomorrow remains to be seen. If you’re looking for a nice spa day with your mum or a luxurious, tranquil oasis complete with fluffy white robes and slippers, look elsewhere. But if your body just really needs a massage and you don’t want to schedule weeks in advance or spend more than 50 quid, Spa & Massage Earl’s Court is where you want to go.
