I too will spread the Spreads love.(Couldn’t resist, sorry …) I literally breathlessly stumbled into Spreads over the holidays while running from a mob of tourists within the stone street labyrinth that is Covent Garden. I was pleased that my safe-haven turned out to also be a quaint tea/sandwich/dessert house that seated a maximum of 15 people, and nowhere that the mob of visiting parade watchers could bring their tour groups of 100 flag waving, bus riding, hat wearing enthusiasts. Spreads is the type of place that I could see Granny insisting on returning to again and again, if for nothing more than the«beautiful» faded fruit print tablecloths that theoretically match the wallpaper in her loo, and that the adorable man that runs the joint remembers both her name and order each time she walks through the door. The menu consists of jacket potatoes topped with an array of canned goods, sandwiches, burgers and an enormous selection of breaded fish options. The treats looked much better, in fact I nearly fork-dove into a neighbouring diner’s blueberry cheesecake this afternoon, but decided against it due to the outcome of the last food jealously outburst and resulting law suit … But I’d agree with Lizzie, the lure of fine cuisine isn’t the reason you come to spreads. Instead, you come to fully ring out the corporate-crowd-pleasing vibe and soak up the old-school local charm.

This is one of the cutest cafes in the area and a hidden gem which means that generally it’s not packed with tourists. It’s nothing glamorous, just an old school tea rooms that serves nice cake, good sandwiches at reasonable prices. Why do I love it so much? It’s comfortable and relaxing to sit in there, a bit romantic too if your planning a lunch date. A good place to catch up with friends. I rate this so highly not because it’s fantastic food and service but because it got great London charm and I love dropping into Spreads! Seriously, if you have a free afternoon pop in with a friend, don’t expect wifi, don’t even think about trying their toilets, it’s places like this that need Unilocal to ‘spread’ it’s secrets.
