When your local area only has one Fish ‘n’ Chip shop, beggars can’t be choosers, but we are lucky in having the Standard Fish Bar. It has some of the friendliest and most efficient staff I’ve ever encountered in a chip shop and just about every meal is handed over piping hot with a smile and cheery«Enjoy your meal». Particularly welcome are the kids-sized meals — no worries about having to divide up an adult meal, or end up with uneaten food that has to be thrown away. My kids like the small-sized fish in batter, and rarely leave any left-overs. (The staff welcome children — indeed, one of my son’s earliest school trips was a trip to the Fish Bar to go behind-the-scenes and see how potatoes are chipped and fish get battered! This must be a regular thing as they have a photo of another school’s visit on one of the counters.) And as someone who likes mushy peas, I love that you can get a pot of green gooey goodness freshly microwaved, while curry sauce is another option that goes down well in our household.
