Another market stall on Berwick Street… but this one is up there with the best of lunch venues in Soho! I’m normally a regular at Jerusalem Falafel next door, but a friend asked if I had tried this(seemingly new) stall for lunch. He exclaimed the pulled pork was big in both taste and size. I could imagine he’s correct! But for my first visit I «played it safe» with a steak(28 day hung) and cheese(provolone) sub(on brioche, as all the subs here are). It wasn’t a huge amount of steak, so I imagine the«dub sub»(pulled pork, jerk sauce, and crackling) is, quantity-wise, a bigger bang for your buck. However, at least in the case of my steak«rodeo» sub, it was the toppings that stole the show. The black truffle mayo was heavenly. The pickled chilis were delightfully sweet. The chutney… well, the chutney was overkill, but it all worked very well together. My only issue with it being that it was over too soon — which says a lot about the moreish taste — but I really did wish for a little more steak and cheese. It was just so tasty, who could blame me for wanting more? I said this was«playing it safe» because the undoubted star of their menu(and top of the price list) is their«Sub-marine» sandwich. Pulled pork with(no kidding): calamari, seared scallop, lemon and salad. And probably other stuff, given the love of toppings here. Unfortunately my steak was already ordered when they threw the ingredients for the Sub-marine on the grill… it looked utterly sublime, and a lot of meat, too! I’ll definitely be back to see if their other options can propel a promising new lunch market up to 5 stars. Great start, though!
