In terms of product quality and extensive retailing heritage, Swaine Adeney Brigg is typical of high end London shops with pedigree made official with a Royal Warrant. Unfortunately seemingly as the result of this distinction and a leather briefcase in the novel and film «From Russia With Love», Swaine Adeney Brigg is resting its fattened backside on one of its bespoke $ 300 shooting sticks.
I must also note that there is only one warrant, and it is from Prince Charles, not the Queen. The Queen has granted a royal warrant to Fulton. Fulton is in a different, more middle class league, however, and its products are not handcrafted in the UK. There are other prestigious bespoke umbrella retailers with a long history, including James Fox. That’s where my money now goes. As well, I spend my money for leather goods at one of a myriad of specialty shops.
I have purchased Swaine Adeney products since 1989. There was even a store in San Francisco briefly in the early 1990s, and its marketing slogan should have been similar to what the Brits used to say about American servicemen: Overrated, Overpaid, and Overhere.
Do not get me wrong. Quality is paramount, and manufacturing tradition and methods are imperative, but when a shop assistant behaves in an officious manner as if a member of titled nobility, and online queries through their website ignored on multiple occasions, there is an issue with customer service. But landed gentry must be treated in such an officious manner as it is part of the shopping experience.
I have found customer service lacking in person at Piccadilly, and in the virtual world, I have given up completely on Swaine Adeney.

This is probably London’s No. 1 Leathergoods store and the umbrellas are probably the best in the whole of the UK. And I must say they are very old school, which is very rare to find nowadays. I bought a black/​noir leather UK passport holder in this store and that was back in June 2006. The passport holder had the Queen’s Royal crest on it.

Swaine Adeney Brigg makes the finest umbrellas in the world. They are robust, sturdy, and should last for generations. I ordered one sent back to the United States and found the staff cheerful, pleasant, and professional. We chatted about umbrellas for thirty minutes. Though the Briggs umbrella is not as thin and elegant as a Fox Frame umbrella, you can rest assured that in a downpour or typhoon, your Briggs umbrella is the best available.
Not a designer nor fashion statement, a Briggs umbrella still will cost an arm and a leg (210 GBP = $ 336 US Dollars 1÷30÷10)
