This is tough. The staff were all very nice. So it makes saying anything less than nice harder. The hotel is not great but adequate. Ad pictures not quite accurate. The room was quite small but is likely a reflection of the style and architecture of the area. The room was clean. The shower stall is too small in the single. If only there had been a soap holder to hold the bar or packet of shower gel. No where to put them. Picking up anything inside the shower stall was difficult. The TV was an old dusty small CRT. OK, that’s not why we get a room but it worked. The breakfast buffet was typical. Ham, cheese, bread buns, toast, cereal, juice, a pot of decent coffee. No complaints. The staff kept everything stocked so the surprisingly-filled(but too small) room of guests were accommodated. Biggest let down was the front entrance way, ground level flooring and the ancient elevator with decrepit carpet. If only the owners would get a serious face-lift there, this could be a 4 star Unilocal. They just aren’t helping first impressions with this worn appearance and grubby carpet. Noise on Swinton Street was not terrible after hours with windows closed. Kings Cross Underground and network trains station 5 minute walk. Friends in London said the Kings Cross area was quite run down in the past but has been improved considerably. It’s decent enough now. As for the Swinton Hotel, there is scaffolding outside in what looks like an external renovation. So maybe all is moving in the right direction after all. I’d much prefer larger rooms but would stay there again.
