Solid gastropub. Decent wine and beer selection, and served a real traditional mulled wine over the holidays. Nicer than a lot of the pubs around Stamford Bridge, though the best time to drop in is on a day Chelsea isn’t playing to enjoy the laid back atmosphere and food.

First time in London, Europe Went on a guided tour to several places in Europe and our hotel was located near the Butcher’s Hook. My husband and I decided to eat dinner at this nice small gastropub. When we got in, we were invited by a nice intimate setting. It was open seating so we sat ourselves near a window in the back. Overall place was nice and clean. When the waiter came to help us with suggestions and food choices, he was helpful and absolutely friendly. We had ordered several items to try out including the Duck Scotch Egg and all the food came out pretty great. The portion was fair. They offered bread but it wasn’t anything special and not my favorite. Overall the price was pretty expensive but it was nice to try.

Make sure you know when lunch is stopped serving… but they do have an all day menu so that is good! The fish and chips were good but the chips were a little lacking. I want to come bAck for more later

My first Scotch Egg was from this place and I have not been able to find one that quite compares to their Duck Scotch Egg!

We went before a Chelsea game to get a drink(and they were kind enough in a swarmed madhouse to get me one of their appetizers, a very tasty pork terrine). We decided to make reservations for after the next Chelsea match and in what was again a madhouse, they had our table ready, were quick to bring us our drinks and get us our orders and the food was really good! Tasty risotto(my husband also really liked the steak), nice wine for a very reasonable price, helpful staff and a pleasant atmosphere all around.(Please note: we are Chelsea fans, but you do not need to be to enjoy the food and atmosphere here, and as another reviewer indicated, they do not play the games). Recommended!

Great place just outside Chelsea Football ground, lovely décor, excellent service. Prices were high, but worth it for the quality of food it offers. Worth trying if you’re in the area.

Had a Sunday lunch here with my Mum. Good portions and a hearty red wine. Atmosphere was nice and the rustic décor was a nice touch. However, couldn’t quite bring myself to give it 5 stars as the roast was good, but not great.

There are few things in life I love to hate more than Chelsea Football Club. Had I known anything about The Butcher’s Hook when I selected it, more or less randomly, from The Good Food Guide, I likely would have reconsidered my choice. That would have been a shame, because this is a superior gastropub. If you are as ignorant as I was, here’s a little background: The Butcher’s Hook sits at the corner of Fulham Road and Holmead Road in Fulham, directly across the street from the Stamford Gate(east) entrance to Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge stadium. In 1905, the pub on this site was called The Rising Sun, and it was here on March 10 of that year that Henry Augustus Mears and Frederick Parker founded Chelsea Football Club. Indeed, The Butcher’s Hook hosted the Chelsea FC centennial celebration shortly after it opened in February 2005. Wonderfully, none of this history is apparent in the pub. We arrived for a Saturday lunch to find the main room large, clean and inviting, with simple stripped-wood floors and furniture, white walls and natural lighting muted by sheer white curtains. The tables are well spaced, giving the room an open and relaxed ambience. The bar was pouring two cask ales, both from Greene King; my IPA was served at the perfect cellar temperature and carbonation level. The Butcher’s Hook emphasizes its wines, however, having been named the Best Wine Pub for 2008 by The Publican. They do have a large and varied wine list, with many selections also available by the glass and 500 ml carafe. The menu suggests wine pairings with several of the starters and mains. The Butcher’s Hook describes its menu as having a «strong British slant,» and perhaps many of the dishes have roots in traditional British cuisine, but chef Jacky Lelievre’s French roots are plain to see in the preparations. As we often do for lunch at a new restaurant, we chose to sample and share a variety of starters. We were pleased with all four; three of the four were excellent. The standout dish for me was the mushroom and gorgonzola pie; the mushrooms were musky and meaty and blended perfectly with a restrained, creamy gorgonzola; the pastry crust was flawlessly light and airy, vanishing in one’s mouth to leave a hint of texture and flavor. The confit pig cheeks were rich and tender, the crispy onions and lentils accompaniments giving it depth and range at each end of the flavor scale. The beer-battered whiting goujons were light and crispy and delicious. Only the Old Spot port and sage terrine wasn’t exceptional – but it was still quite good, particularly with the caramelized onion marmalade. Even the basket of sourdough bread that preceded the meal was deliciously tart and crusty and notably superior. The one flaw in the meal was dessert. Heidi had an own-made hokey pokey ice cream. The flavor was bland – on par with a generic supermarket vanilla – and the texture icy. I have complained about gastropub service in the past; I have no such complaints about The Butcher’s Hook. The room was rather crowded by the end of our lunch, with one very large party occupying much of our server’s time. Nevertheless, she remained responsive and helpful throughout our meal, and the serving staff generally was quick and friendly. Overall, we had a very positive experience and would happily return to The Butcher’s Hook – its unfortunate connections to Chelsea FC notwithstanding!

I stopped in here for a friend’s birthday and was glad I did! The menu is impressive, the servers helpful and polite, and the food great. What’s keeping this from 5 stars? It’s a bit pricy. The servers were incredibly helpful – From suggesting beers to answering likely tiresome questions and even attempting to translate British to American English. I have absolutely no complaints here!(For the record, the one thing they didn’t know was what«rocket» is. Americans, you know this as «arugula.») Right after we placed our order, a basket of the best bread I’ve ever had came out. If you look at my picture you’ll notice there are only 3 pieces. This is because I had the 4th in my mouth as I was taking the picture. Perfectly cooked, light, warm, delicious! Yum. For a started we got the Butcher’s Hook platter. It’s a great selection of cold and dried meats and a few pickled veggies. Perfect to split for two people! My main course was the beef carpaccio and a side of chips(don’t judge me). The carpaccio and salad were excellent, and the chips were an interesting mix of super crispy and slightly soggy. I guess they’re catering to both preferences? At any rate, it was wonderful. The menu listed some amazing sounding desserts, but we had eaten so much that we didn’t have room. I guess that means we’ll have to go back, which is not a problem for me!

Being an ardent Chelsea fan for the past 40 plus years, it would only make sense I would need to visit the historic place where Chelsea was formed over a handshake at a pub called the Rising Sun 100 plus yrs ago. The building itself has wonderful clean lines, lots of white and natural wood’s being blended together in a modern style. The couple of times we went, we popped in for a pint on the way to our hotel across the street. The bar is quite a nice respite from the busy outdoors scene around the Stamford Bridge. The bar staff were really very accommodating and polite. We ordered a few pints and relaxed at the large wooded table which served as a divide between the bar and the restaurant. In the corner of the bar was what looked a like a huge ham leg, cured, and in a special holding device so they could cut off slices for sandwiches I would imagine. We were there on Mum’s day, so several folks were enjoying a brunch. The plates looked extremely tasty and overheard some patrons remarked on the goodness of their orders. The beers were nice and cold and they made sure to keep them full for us. Although this is modern chic environment, it seems it would be a great place for a sunday brunch. One oddity is, they do not carry football on the one telly in the place… I mean it’s the scene of the formation of one of the best footie teams in the world(yes that is in my humble opinion) and it sits across the road from Stamford Bridge… I guess they don’t want to be a sports bar but more of a restaurant. which frankly is fine by me.

What a find the pub was. Just across the road from the hotel next to Chelsea football club. It served great food at very reasonable prices. The atmosphere was buzzing, the house wine very quaffable,(good job the hotel was close), the staff were friendly and service was excellent. Our stay was only for three nights and of those two were spent eating and drinking here. On one occasion we were in a bit of a hurry as we wanted to eat before heading into the west end for a show. The staff recommended something from the menu which would be prepared straight away, which it was and was delicious. I would go there again and can say the place was fantastic.

I visited the Butchers Hook on a Work Do and was throughly impressed with the food! Personal favourite had to be the prawns in a beer glass, if not slightly messy to shell def worth it. There was at least 20 of us in the group but we all received our meals at the same time which is always a good thing in a large crowd! Although we were here early evening I expect this place gets packed out especially on match days as its right opposite Stamford Bridge. In fact a little piece of info, the original Chelsea Team was actually created upstairs in the Butchers Hook! Go there its worth a visit

The wife and I went here for dinner as we continue to integrate ourselves into our new neighborhood. The location is really great, right near Fulham Broadway tube station and across the street from Stamford Bridge. A self-proclaimed«gastropub» which sounds like some sort of bowel obstruction, the menu at the Butcher’s Hook is impressive to say the least. But nothing looked appetizing. Whatever happened to simple pub grub? It felt like it was trying way too hard to be trendy and michelin-starry. We started with the pea and bacon soup which was a bit watery and the bacon had evidently been cured in salt. Although the bread and butter was a nice touch. For entrées I had the côte de boeuf and my wife had the pork belly. Both were pretty good with great vegetables and good portions. The place itself was nicely laid out and by the time we started eating was packed with 25 – 30 year olds — good to know! Nice atmosphere, reasonable food, not too expensive. They just need to tone down the menu a notch. It’s funny, they were advertising their Sunday roast dinner which looked absolutely delicious. Simple, traditional, very appealing. If they could apply that to the rest of their menu, they’d be on to something.

The important thing about smoked haddock with a poached egg is the egg. The egg has to be absolutely perfect. Too runny and you are covered in goo, too long on the hot plate and it has a disappointing cheese consistency. And so I stabbed my poached egg with enormous anticipation… and it was… absolutely perfectly perfect. Well done Butchers Crook. I was meeting the Mysterious Blonde for a pub supper on a Friday evening and acting on his suggestion to tackle a new venue. Good points — great location very near Fulham Broadway but not on the Broadway, nice décor, good ambience, predictable but extensive menu, just the right level of chatter that allows for meaningful conversation(which is always a pleasure with the Mysterious Blonde who is font of West London gossip), nice courteous waiting staff who are not intrusive, well presented food, fun cheese board. Bad points — um, er, bugger, cant think of any. Will have to upgrade to 4 stars.
