Super sweet cupcake, piled high with frosting– almost half the height of the cake! Cake is moist and very rich, and red velvet has proper cream cheese frosting. Good that the gluten free option is red velvet rather than plain — my friend was really pleased to not have to take vanilla once again. Really gorgeous cake displays.

I really love this shop. They have the best cupcakes that I’ve had in London(besides the Oreo cupcake at Harrod’s!) and I’ve tried a lot of different places. The flavors change frequently so there’s always something new to try. The chocolate cupcake was delicious and moist and I had a really nice limited edition apple cupcake. It’s kind of hard to find, but once you know where it is, it’s worth the trek down the winding back streets to return! They have student discounts right before closing time so that’s always a bonus.

I think Buttercup is fab. Aside from their yummy cupcakes, they are just good people. I am an active member of and one of my groups is Cupcake Chicks – just a group of chicks that wander the streets of London in search of some good cake. The girls at Buttercup were friendly and accommodating and they allowed our group to take over their store for a bit one Saturday afternoon. The shop is very small and there were very few tables; we literally took over the WHOLE shop. The assistant manager didn’t even bat an eye, she served us all up with tea and cakes and when we bought her out of certain flavours she offered to make us some more. I had a double vanilla cake and it was lovely. I love the homemade icing! Besides the standard flavours they also have a few fun ones such as the Elvis Presley which is of course banana with peanut butter icing. I brought a few home for my husband and I think the fact that all three were gone in the space of one hour says a lot!

It’s probably best I didn’t fall in love with these cupcakes given the shop’s proximity to my flat. My cupcake standard is high(off the top of my head, only That Takes The Cake in San Francisco measures up) so while these looked cute, I found them a touch dry, particularly the red velvet. Perhaps not enough buttermilk in the batter? When in a cupcake pinch, these’ll do, but if you’re looking for London’s best… don’t call off the search just yet.

Cup cakes are the best, birthday cup cakes are the bestest! Now over here we call them fairy cakes but with American fever we have in the Kensington area, called them cupcakes seems appropriate. Miriam W treated me to a box of 4 and I even got to pick out the flavours. Red velvet, as an all time favourite, carrot cake as it need my vegetable allowance for the day, a peanut butter one for Miriam(I could hardly eat all 4 in front of her and not choose one for her too!) and a lemon flavour one for my flat mate. All in all my sweet tooth was satisfied, I managed to scoff down at least one and a half cakes before I gave in and had to save the rest for later. These are just wonderful for birthdays, they do mini cakes and even full size cakes. I’d high recommend the carrot, ooo maybe I’ll go make a cup of tea now and finish that one off.
