Nothing can describe the Nations gratitude for the Sacrifices made over the years by men and women of our Armed Forces. However, this striking memorial, known to so many worldwide, is not a bad effort. Designed and built by Edwin Lutyens, it was unveiled by King George on November 11th1919. Interesting to note that Cenotaph is Greek for Empty Tomb.appropriate. Those of us that have had the privilege to stand, march past or push a wheelchair on Remembrance Sunday cannot fail to be moved by the flood of emotion that prevails on this day. To all who have never been to The Cenotaph, I say, go once and you will not come away the same person!

On a day when hooligans have been shamefully trashing parts of London, I feel it’s appropriate to review the Cenotaph. Located on Whitehall, it’s crememorates the deaths of all British servicemen in past wars. Its simplicity — a carved wreath on each end with the words«The Glorious Dead», which were chosen by Rudyard Kipling — is so thought-provoking, haunting and humbling in making us remember the sacrifice of those who have laid down their lives so that we may have the freedoms which we enjoy today. Values which have sadly eluded those who are randomly looting and commiting acts of violence on the streets of London over the last few nights. If they are caught, they should suffer the same fate as Charlie Gilmour(adopted son of Pink Floyd guitarist Dave Gilmour), who was jailed earlier this year for dishonouring the Cenotaph by hanging from a flag on it during the violent student protests earlier this year.
