a great standard for a romantic meal for 2 or catching up with friends. love the rustic but clean ambiance. decent wine list although servers can’t offer much insight with food pairing. menu provided an array of dishes, something for everyone.

Very unfriendly barman. I complained my wine had loads of cork floating in it and he said«well I’m not opening another bottle, it might happen again». Won’t be going back

i’ve passed the house quite a few times while ambling the hood. my flatmate and i decided to pop in for a dinner. she’s always loved it though she mentioned she’s had the best and worst meals there. upon opening the meals, she reckoned that the chef had changed becasue all plates were unrecognizable to her. she had the prork chops and i had the burger. service was a bit wonky. the host had to ask at the bar when questioned about specials. odd since she seemed like a manager and didn’t know the specials by heart. we had another server take our wine order. she tried to push an australian shiraz on us, though we were both set on a spanish merlot. it was okay and maybe we should have take her rec. my burger was cooked at my desired medium rear and the chips were crispy and moist inside. nom nom! my flatmate quite liked her pork chops. our plates were cleaned. apparently, one of the few places in the hood to have an outdoor meal. it gets packed in the summers so you’ve been warned.

Very nice — although VERY rich — dinner at the House last night. Very friendly staff were nice and chatty while I waited 45 minutes for my rather late friend and were happy to keep offering drinks, bread etc. I had a really gorgeous gnocchi dish with wild mushrooms, rocket and lots of garlic and truffle oil — it came with a separate mushroom cream sauce which strictly speaking it didn’t really need, but naturally I sloshed a load of it on top. Delicious. I should really have stopped there but after my pudding anxiety(my friend arrived and said she only had an hour and 20 minutes before having to get back to the babysitter, and my immediate response was ‘Oh god, will I still have time for pudding??’) I felt honour bound to plough on with dessert. I had a sticky toffee pudding with extra toffee sauce(which it needed, it would have been a bit dry without it). It was OK, not the best ever, as the texture could have been softer and more moist — but a good flavour. I managed to polish off the lot, anyway. My friend had some slightly anaemic looking fishcakes but they did look like they had a lot of fish — salmon and crab — and not too much padding. She declined on dessert — luckily I don’t mind troughing away by myself. The prices seemed fair — and there was a good choice — I would definitely have those gnocchi again.

Yep, 5 stars!!! I don’t want to brush my teeth because I have the delicious flavors still in my mouth and the lovely finish of a good red wine. I will end up brushing my teeth because my mom raised me well, but still, a testiment to the yumminess. So I struggle with the word«gastropub». Although this place has«pub-like» features such as wood and beer, that’s about all that it has in common with a traditional pub. I would even struggle to say it was a pub-inspired restaurant. The House is literally a beautiful house set just right off Upper Street in what quickly becomes a lovely residential upscale hood. It feels like you are walking into someone’s home, and they have a fireplace and couches in the front. Oh, and the patio is amazing – I can imagine it would be a great place in the summer. OK, onto the food. That is what sold me… seasonal ingredients, innovative combos, beautiful presentation. I wanted to order 15 things, but we limited ourselves to the smoked chicken terrine with brioche toast(YUM), the scallops with bacon and pansip purée(YUM), a pumpkin and sage canelloni(YUM), and a tartine of beetroot and apple with goat cheese and greens(SUPERYUM). Oh, and they have this basket of warm homemade bread that they bring for you to choose between different white and brown breads.(HEAVEN) Service was great – I feel like it must have been the owner that waited on us, and the bartender checked in on my friend to see if he liked the Old Fashioned he had prepared. Didn’t see a single person drinking beer, so I deny the word pub in its description, but definitely a place to go for a great meal(or a nice date). And they have brunch on the weekends, so I wll be back.

This is one very upmarket gastropub. it seems all alone in surburbia but really is not too far from Upper St. The outdoor area is lovely and leafy — and i think i am going to want to come back in winter to sit of those beautiful leather lounges in front of that open fire.
