I’m a big fan of the Manor House. When it opened up in the sunny months of the year, the front beer garden filled with wooden picnic tables were a magnet for Wanstead professionals and young families alike. I wiled away many a sunny afternoon partaking in the good selection of beer and wine coupled with fresh, delicious gastro-pub fare. As the days grew darker and colder, and the Manor House’s patrons retreated into its large Georgian rooms, it was like a different world, however. The place has so much potential to be a homely, inviting environment over the cold winter months, with its Georgian grandour. But it’s not. The décor inside is spartan and minimal. The exposed bulbs hanging from the ceiling are stark and anachronistic, juxtaposed with the period features of the building. The food and drink are all the same, regardless of the season, but I would much rather spend a cosy winter afternoon in one of Wanstead’s other, more comfy pubs than the Manor House. Until next summer, Manor House. Until next summer…
