Although I had stuffed myself just a few hours earlier, I knew I had to get a rib roll from The Rib Man and eat it on my train back to Manchester. A small rib roll with coleslaw was £7 which seemed fairly reasonable for the amount and quality of food. Delicious pulled rib meat is piled high onto a soft white roll and then slathered with sauces of your choice. I went for BBQ sauce and plain coleslaw although I think the sandwich would have benefited from some hot sauce and/or spicy slaw. I’ll know for next time. By the time my platform was announced(what is up with that, Euston, why are you so intent on causing stampedes) my roll was a little bit cold and a little bit soggy but still very enjoyable. Thankfully nobody sat in the seat next to me so there was nobody to judge/envy me while I wolfed my food. The only slight let down was the service. I won’t name and shame as they did nothing wrong and weren’t exactly rude, just very disengaged. A little enthusiasm wouldn’t go amiss — though admittedly it was a dreary Sunday afternoon. If you’re getting a train or you work near Euston I highly recommend

A great addition to the growing food(and some great new independent) food and drink options down at Euston station — somewhere I’ve probably got 100 trains in and out of in the past 7 years… It used to be that you’d need to nip somewhere properly chainy or M&S to get your evening meal but things are improving. I’ve been enjoying Rib Man food for a number of years at different foodie markets around London and it’s a great success story to see it now set this permanent place up. I had the large rib sandwich(£9 — and amazing and huge!) and a bag of tasty nuts. Why not 5 stars? Well I did feel the range of things like drinks and sweet treats was very limited — would be great to see some extras to make this a full meal fit for a king :-)

The Rib Man has opened a stall in Euston station right next to my work! I can’t say that I eat here often, I might die of pork overload, but sometimes, you need a decent barbeque sandwich. It was dead when I went, but I think it’s because of the torrential rainstorm that was happening outside Euston station at the time. Lucky me. I got the small rib roll and the spicy coleslaw. I also got the spicy barbeque sauce. Unfortunately, they only have the Holy F*ck hotsauce on hand and not the Christ on a Bike hotsauce(my favorite). But it still a pretty mean sandwich. The spicy coleslaw is also great! And given a lot of stuff in Euston station is pretty poor, having a quality rib sandwich outside the station is handy.

An avid follower of Mark Gevaux — also known as The Rib Man — on social media for a long time, I was pretty much over the moon when travelling back from London to remember he has a new branch at Euston station. Usually a trader at Kerb on a Sunday, and well known for selling out in the first hour or so, these really are the best ribs in the city. This is a small branch but there are plenty of benches outside in the public realm of the station if you have time to spare before your train. I had at least an hour free so happily set up for a while with my roll. Being around 5pm, it wasn’t busy at all so I was served quickly but I can imagine a queue would form at peak times. Service was super friendly and casual — grab yourself a drink when they’re dishing up, and remember to grab a wet wipe and some napkins! Beer is available, an obviously great option if you’re a bit travel tired. Now, the ribs. We’re talking huge hunks of shredded rib meat with a few crispy edges thrown in for good measure. The roll itself is a simple white bloomer, which fully soaks up all the delicious hot sauce. You can top it with ketchup or two levels of hot sauce, the latter of which are what Mark is known for. Visit The Rib Man’s online shop to purchase a variety of hot sauces and rubs to replicate the experience at home — but give one of his stalls a visit first to see how it’s really done!

I’ve noticed The Rib Man the last couple of times I’ve been through Euston(he’s just outside the front door) and was excited to see what appeared to be independent street food at a major train station. Now I have discovered The Rib Man is basically famous and deservedly so, as his rib rolls are fantastic. Beautiful meat which I paired with BBQ sauce and hot sauce, a winner in my book. Good value at £6 given the size of the roll, ready quickly and service very friendly. Not sure who is behind the Junction(which also contains an Australian coffee joint and some hot dogs which I should also probably sample for research purposes) but I love the concept and hope it takes off at more stations! The reason I was at Euston at dinnertime was that I hadn’t realised the last off peak train back to Manchester is at 3pm(seriously, that is so unreasonable) and I then raced to the first off peak evening train which was of course packed and I couldn’t find a seat. I’d had an awful day and was hungry so I ended up just sitting on the floor between 2 carriages and shoving the roll into my face, getting covered in sauce, as judgmental fellow travellers side-eyed me while scrambling for the remaining seats. Thus sated, I sat back content to spent the next 2 hours on a floor outside a toilet. That was when I got sent to sit in first class. Good times.
