Good chippy, take-away upstairs, eat-in below. Tables are for four, but if you are sufficiently flexible you can just about squeeze six in with a couple of(provided) extra chairs. Service is characterful. The waitress is costumed as an old fashioned Nippy, dashing hither & yon with absurd energy, keeping up a stream of enthusiastic and amusing banter. She has a system for taking orders, and you had jolly well better play along with it. Main dishes first, no need to specify chips, I think even if you ordered just a plate of chips they’d probably come with chips. Then side dishes & accompaniments; mushy peas, onion rings, or perhaps(new!) beans, gravy or curry sauce. Finally, drinks — despite the promise on the window and the frustrating presence of a six-foot glass of lager on the wall there is no license. Tea it is then, or a can of the usual varieties of pop. The orders are shouted up the lift, and you’ll be told how long you’ll wait(10 minutes of so for fish). The food is great, fish perfectly cooked in a crisp batter, portions are large, the tea is good and in a proper mug. Negative points stop this from being a five-star chippy: the tables are cramped, and lit with unflattering fluorescent lights, plastic glasses for canned drinks, and they won’t let you bring in a bottle from the offy over the road. Ketchup also a bit watered down, or perhaps an inferior brand. Well worth a visit though, be sure to go hungry.

Now I’m quite excited that Unilocal has gone Euro and I’m even more excited that I get to review this fish and chip shop that I always have to go to when I visit my grandma. It’s towards the«end» of leather lane depending on where you start(away from the business and towards the more residential area). During the day the market invades the street and at dusk it’s really quiet and easy to spot. I really only eat chips and saveloy so I can’t judge the fish, but the saveloy always has a crisp skin and the chips are plentiful and savory. I normally get vinegar on the side because I don’t’ stay here and the décor is obviously not of any high quality because you’re going there for the food. For my fellow NY/USA Unilocalers, don’t compare it to tea & sympathy because this moderately priced establishment will do you one better. Great greasy food with a product(saveloy) that you can’t get in the good old US of A.
