Tuk Tuk is cheap and for the price, you really can’t complain about the food nor the service too much. They are fast, like super fast, at making the food, serving the food and getting you the bill. But this suits me just fine as it’s a lunch time thing for me and my colleagues and we need to be fed within half an hour tops before we get back to the daily grind. I always have the tom ka gay, it’s a good fill-me-up especially seeing as today, I was starving. When I’m really hungry I go for the po pea jay as well(vegetarian spring rolls) and devour those too. Kate who has been itching to be taken there had the nasi goreng, which she said was really good and pretty authentic. This was washed down with a Singha beer and some jasmine tea. I used to go with another friend Luke, who introduced me to the place, but he’s up and left me for a new job and he used to have the laksa. Sometimes the quality of the meat and ingredients can be a little bit suspicious but on the whole, it’s cheap and wholesome fare. It’s not as cheap as Cha Cha Moon and lacks the shiny gloss of the aforementioned restaurant, but it feels a little more genuine somehow. The easy wipe Formica tables, the naff love songs playing in the background, this is how Chinatown kinda used to be in the old days before some giant corporation got hold of it and tried to develop it. Basic, simple and cheap meals that aren’t half bad.

Tuk tuk is one of those life saver places, you know, it’s 3 a. m and you are really hungry, maybe a little drunk. You don’t want a burger or chips you jsut want some noodles. Well, maybe not specifically noodles, but as soon as you see this place with its steaming piles of hot fresh curries and wok fried delights, you are converted to the idea. I remember wandering aimlessly around the area after a night out, with one of my friends moaning really badly about how she could kill for some sweet and sour chicken. I thought that there was no way she could get her hands on some at 4 a. m… how about a kebab? When suddenly, out of the blue, we came accross this little life saver. The noodles seemed amazing at the time. My friend was weeping over the sweet and sour. And they have continued to be amazing when we have eaten there in that state. I have never eaten there in the day, and probably never will. I am saving the place for those amazing moments in the early hours, when the noodles warm you up and you feel alive again, ready to take the bus home.
