This is, as far as I know, the only Vietnamese place on Camberwell Church street and a handy place it is to have around indeed. Their phở makes a cold day better and the people who work here are friendly. Cheaper and more healthy than the chipper. Cash only

Great little local Vietnamese and Chinese place. Go for the fresh and healthy Vietnamese if you need that or the really well executed Cantonese stuff for comfort. Their phở is delicious and their salt and chilli squid the best I’ve had.

Went there last night for some cheap but good grub. They’ve had a little makeover, but you come here for the food not the vibes or the chi chi surroundings, just home made chow. We had the pepper squid, prawn rolls, a fresh salad, soup and the sizzling tofu and aubergine, followed by ho fun mixed meat, chicken curry and rice and beef fried noodles. Nice food, nice price and now they have a licence so we had some beers too. The bin outside has gone, although it never had any detrimental effect inside apart from keeping the riff raff at bay [see above]. 1993 seems good to me. Keep it neighbourhood and the hoi polloi can go eat in Clapham.

The main problem with van Hing, other than the fact that if you peer through the window it looks like 1993 in there, is that they have an ginormous, industrial-sized bin RIGHTOUTSIDE their front door, so on a hot day, it stinks to high heaven and makes you think, «Jesus, let’s go eat somewhere else». If they could sort this problem out, then one day I might actually go inside. They might dish up the greatest Vietnamese fare in the world in there. But somehow I doubt it.
