What the Butler Wore

A great vintage shop in Waterloo… they used to have an also great records shop downstairs, but not any more…
Dresses, coats, bags, shoes… if you enjoy vintage, you will have a great time going through all the stuff in this shop. Also a good place to pick up flyers and events info.

This is definitely my kind of shop. This place sells gorgeous vintage attire from the 50s & 60s. Prices vary from around £30 to £80 for a dress, depending on the quality.
I was on a mission to buy gold shoes once and I ended up getting them here. They are my most favourite vintage shoes.
Not everything in here is worth picking up but, like many vintage stores, you can always find a wee gem in here somewhere. The stock changes every few weeks I find, so keep coming back for new bits and bobs…

What did the butler wear?
Well if he dressed himself in this shop, he’d be wearing a lot of uninteresting vintage.
Some people like 80’s vintage with its loud sequins and copious ruffles. Some people like 60’s vintage with its flowing skirts and bohemian prints. Some people like the emperor’s new clothes which gets quite risqué. Some people like to ride Bengali tigers around town. What the Butler wore like mainly dull 40 – 60’s clothes that don’t much hold my attention. Nor do they hold grudges, which is always appreciated. Someone somewhere sometime someplace will like this stuff, but it’s not my style. I want color and pizazz and fitted pencil skirts and 20’s flapper dresses, not much of which I saw here. (I saw not, but nor did I chainsaw. Good thing eh? But if you know of a good see saw in town, we should talk).
There’s a lot to look at in the store and the staff seems nice enough, but if this store were a magnet, I wouldn’t be a metallic product. I’d probably be plastic, or cellophane or just walnuts and peanuts and nuts nuts nuts.

This is the sort of shop that can no longer afford to exist within Zone 2 North of the river but just nestled into South London and it’s still going strong with staff who are happy to keep up their ongoing conversations and entertain friends just until you really need a hand or want to buy something. A fascinating conversation about council housing was happily bubbling along last time I came in for a browse which made an excellent backdrop for my perusal of the rails of mixed quality vintage and second hand. I didn’t buy anything this time but there were some great party dresses for not too much money.

What the Butler Wore is a great vintage shop. They carry beautiful old school pieces. What is up with vintage high heels though? Why are they so small? Did women have super petite feet in the 1960s or do I just have gigantic bear paws? It’s just so odd. If I could fit into a pair of one of these gorgeous shoes then I would be out £20, £30 maximum.
They carry awesome coats and beautiful dresses. I found a bowtie selection that would make any swing dancer weep. Men’s clothes are abundant in this store as well. There are lots of really suave jackets for male hipsters.
The woman that runs the shop is lovely. She helped me through the whole shopping experience. If I needed any information from her she was quick to provide it. This place is just a great experience.

Cool retro fashion storea jewel in an otherwise strange cobblestone street!
Vintage, retro, antique, you name it.
Accessories, bags, shoes, coats, all the stuff you wish your great aunt had kept for you for when you ‘grew up’!
Worth a browse if you are in the area, and if you have a party to go to and loads of ££££££, make it your one stop shop, darling!!!
