I had a serious chip craving this evening, but experiencing that in Homerton/Hackney usually means you’re stuck with shitty oven chips from fried chicken places. I found Wick here on Unilocal and hoped that the promise of «fluffy chips» would still be a thing. Thankfully it was! I can’t speak for the fish; I only got chips with salt & vinegar(£1.40). It wasn’t a steal, but the older gentleman working the counter was super sweet to me. He asked if he could wrap it up for me and put it in a plastic bag to get me home through the London drizzle. Also I presume despite their flashy new orange outside sign, the interior is as stuck in the past as ever(and also orange). Pretty much if I want nice chips within a short walk, I’m hittin’ up this joint.

THEBESTFISHANDCHIPSINLONDON!!! I grew up down the road from this place and we’ve been getting our fish’n’chip fix from there ever since I was a toddler. From as far back as I can remember, it’s been owned by the same family — a lovely husband and wife team who have a very thick accent which I still haven’t been able to place. These guys are terrific! Whenever my dad took me in there, I’d ask for my usual battered sausage and the lady would always call out to her husband who was wrapping and bagging the food, «And a battered sausage for the baby!» In fact, I was referred to as ‘the baby’ until I was about 18! For some reason they always call my dad Chris as well… his name is John! Anyway, if you go to Wick Fisheries you’re always going to be welcomed with a big smile and fast service! The place seems to be stuck in the most delightful time warp. All the original ‘60s fixtures and fittings are still there, right down to the most ancient cash register you’ve ever seen in your life(unless of course you were alive any time prior to 1970… I’m only 26 myself!) The food doesn’t disappoint, either! Lovely, hot, chunky chips in MASSIVE portions drenched in vinegar, mmmmm! As well as top quality fish, pies, saveloy and battered sausage… for the baby.

Unless you fancy a trek down to Brighton(and who wants to do that when they’re hungry?), this is probably the best fish and chip place you are likely to find. Now, being a bit of a Friday night fish-and-chip conoisseur I have been to a fair few London chippies all the way from Ladbroke Grove to London Bridge to London Fields and this is without a doubt the best of them. When we moved to the area last summer and found this place we were absolutely over the moon. The guy who owns it is always super friendly and greets all the customers like regulars — well we probably all are! He lets you choose your own piece of cod and if the ones that are there have been out for a while he will fry you a fresh piece. Cod in London can get ridiculously expensive but here you can get two pieces of decent-sized cod, two generous portions of chips(they let you do your own salt and vinegar) and two cans of Coke for £10.60. So if you are ever in the area(or even if you aren’t) check this place out and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
